Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Today is a sad day here. We woke up to find that our 12 year old siberian Husky passed away in the night :( She was a mischievious brat right up until the end. Dreamy will be teriibly missed.

Most of can relate to how deep a friendship with a dog can be. She was beautiful and you gave her a great life.

Hey yall!
New PA resident here. I had chickens back in Mobile, Alabama, sold them to travel to Europe, married a guy from PA, and followed him to our cozy new home in North Annville, PA. Now that we've settled down a few months... I'm interested in raising a rare breed of chicken for the preservation of the breed.

I'm on the lookout specifically for Black Sumatras. I'm told it would be ideal to get the birds from a Breeder instead of a hatchery. So, while the "state of the art" coop plans are being reviewed by dear husband, Anybody know any breeders nearby? Even in other New England states?

I missed your post. I am sorry.
Welcome to Backyard Chickens! I hope you find all that you are looking for!
I am sorry that it is so cold here, but at least you missed the tornadoes the last few days in Alabama!

Welcome to the group, and to PA !
I have a pair of sumatras that I am hoping to breed. I explained their provenance in more detail in a response to your post in the Sumatra thread. Contact me if you want more details on the strain I have.

I am so sorry...my heart goes out to your whole family. We certainly understand the sense of loss and pain you are going through. The kids will probably have a lot of rough moments since she was there most, if not all of their lives. :hugs

Good luck!
Thanks, she did not enjoy her first dose....

So sorry, I hope she went peacefully...:hugs
I picked up my little bantam Cochin hen today. It was pouring rain and she was pretty wet, so I didn't have a chance to give her a look over. Now that she has settled into her cage in the garage, I see she may be sick. Maybe a sinus infection? Her eyes had bubbles or foam in them, and at first I thought maybe they were irritated by the pine shavings. But as I just looked at her closer, it looks like she has some swelling around her nostrils (nares?). I am thinking of topically applying some diluted tea tree oil around her beak and sinuses.
Definitely keep her isolated until she is over that, it is likely MG, which is very common (I believe wild birds are frequent carriers). An acute flare up can kill a bird, but they generally get over it fine and seem to retain immunity (there is a vaccine, but not commonly used). Do you have any antibiotics on hand? These are what I've used: Oxytetracyline Tylosine (Tylan) You cannot buy these any longer in a form that is meant to be put in the water, but injectable forms of both are still sold by TSC all the time. I have given the injectible Tylan orally. It is considerably more expensive per unit of active ingredient. I prefer to use Oxytet over Tylan, it is cheaper and seems to be stronger in combating MG/MS.
Thanks, I have some Oxytet still, but I want to try the tea tree oil first, diluted. It has helped me kick all kind of bacterial and viral ailments. I figure I will try for a week. Since she is eating and drinking normally, and pooping okay too, I will try the natural way first. If I don't see a turnaround in a week, she gets the Oxytet. I was thinking about using the tea tree oil diluted for lice too... I'll have to do a "focus group" with that too. If her face looks shiny, it's because of the oil. I applied it with a small brush.

Thanks for the Welcome, Motorcycle Chick. The Mobile family is doing well in spite of the stormy weather.  In fact, I will be returning there for a week of Sunny 60's and 70's!!

Yeah, yeah! Rub it in! :tongue
I hope it's freezing cold, and we have two feet of snow in March when I have a friend coming from that area. She and her daughter will be happy until they get out of the car in flip flops!! :gig
