My broody turkey has apparently signed all the papers now and is the legal guardian of the poults. Last night, the hatching Mama BSL was roosting with the rest of the chickens, and today she is with the rest of the flock. Mama Turkey is taking the poults around and keeping them warm.

The past few nights I have had to army crawl under my coop to get my turkey and poults. I think she is afraid to go into the coop because the rooster has been going after her. Hopefully he will be distracted when I show him his two new girls for his harem. Last night when I tried to get her (turkey Mama), it was not completely dark, and she was not asleep. She was NOT happy with me! I got a couple of attack kicks to my head; thank God I was wearing a hat! I don't blame her though, I was taking away her babies. I think it's absolutley amazing that she went from tolerating the poults, to full adoption, in the span of under two weeks.

Time to play "ID that chick", LOL. I have a list of what was sent, but some are hard to tell apart. I definitely can tell the 2 Exchequer Leghorns (2 mottled chicks in the lower right) and the blue laced red wyandotte (grayish in center). Chipmunk striped ones are either Mille Fleur Leghorns or Norwegian Jaehorns, I think.

Some I will not know until they grow up more. There are some games in there (Shamo and Muffed Old English Games), so I can probably see who is fighting and pick them out.

I plan to grow them all out until sexable or identifiable, then decide what to free range and what to sell. This does present a problem for future shipments, as I was expecting them to be marked in some way, if needed, to ID them, then I can sell or trade the unwanted ones as chicks, especially since they are straight run and hence, a lot will be roos.

Holy crap that is a lot of chicks! Dip their beaks carefully. Or hold them with one hand and dip your finger in the water with your other hand, use the water droplet on your finger to give them a drink. Once they taste it they will know what to go for. The chicks are so cute, if they are reds, I would buy them off of you! (with permission from hubby....)

That's awesome! I'm glad she adopted them. My broody turkey attacked the chick I tried to give her and ripped the skin and down almost completely off in one quick shake the whole way around his neck! Some cleaning and stitches and baby had been doing fine. Not a great first day for him though. Queenie will be going to the next swap. I guess your girl figured that they were her type and that chicken had no right raising them ;) I have another broody turkey now. Pebbles had been sitting for almost a week. She doesn't have anything under her but fake eggs. Last year, she was more than willing to accept any babies so I'll wait a week or two and give her a couple CCL cockerels to raise.

I just lost two chicks in a couple min. Not sure why. I think im losing another one. First time I've lost chicks. This really sucks
