Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

There were fewer boys than I thought in this hatch. 4 boys, 5 girls and 1 that I'm not positive on. The 4 boys and 1 iffy one went outside. Only Ana was interested in adoption but the others just haven't been sitting very long yet. Like always, she's very happily caring for her 5 new babies. It's the biggest group I've ever given her. If she does a great job, I may give her a big clutch next time. I have a few more eggs going in to lockdown today. Then 1 more turkey egg due next Monday and the incubator will be empty. I'll have some BCM eggs coming within the month though. I'm hatching most of them for someone else but I'm getting a few for myself too. I think they're Little Peddler and Greenfire lines.

Best of luck with the wild turkey egg! Have you candled yet?

Niko keeps stealing eggs. Every day now, I have to lift her off the eggs to do a count and remove the ones I didn't mark. But the pencil is wearing off. Is there any real reason that at 2/3 of the way thru this incubation that I should not use a dry erase marker? I don't want to poison the clutch but need something that will last longer than a day or two.

I tried candling them also. Either the eggs are too dark shelled or my flashlight is not bright enough. Or both. I couldn't see anything. Not that there was no development, but that I couldn't see to tell. Good thing I only have another week to wait. It's like waiting for Santa!

Use a sharpie! I learned from everybody else here too.

I use a sharpie marker, we have yet to have a chick hatch with a tattoo.:plbb
I know, I know.....v:smack

X2!

That one is a wild turkey egg that my neighbor found. Either he will want it to raise up or I'm going to lol

Definitely use a sharpie. Every one of my eggs, whether they go in the bator or under a broody gets marked with a sharpie. Everyone is always fine :)

Have you watched the documentary/ Tv show My life as a turkey? The guy hatches, imprints, and grows a clutch of wild turkeys. Very different from domesticated. Very cool though.

Oh yeah.
Well, the first broody has no chicks.
One was a blood ring, and the other sprayed me in the face. :sick

Oh barf! Poor thing!

Well my sickly chick seems to be doing much better ther today! It is a female CCL, so I really wanted to try my best, since it guaranteed not to be a Roo. Definitely more active today, standing up and holding its head up and all. The Mamas are paying attention to her as well. I will continue to monitor, but my instincts tell me she will make it. :woot

I called my neighbor to see if she had any ideas on how to restrain her kitty. We made some small talk, and she told me she had surgery recently for a bone infection she has been fighting for a year. :hit

I told her my reason for calling could wait, but she urged me to talk. I felt bad talking about my little turkey chick when she was in this terrible battle. I told her not to worry about it, and that I would just try to keep them contained until they get bigger. If my biggest problem is losing a little turkey chick, I have a fantastic life.

Eww, gross!

I candied it about a week ago and there was an embryo swimming around in there :) My hen, Sweet Pea, is half wild (half bourbon red). She does make some different noises than the other turkeys but hadn't been much different otherwise. I haven't seen that documentary but you're the second person to mention it to me so I'm going to have to.

I'm glad your little chick is doing better!

Prayers for your neighbor. I hope she's able to overcome this struggle.

I am glad she improved, continue with the vitamin drops directly to her a couple times a day and if you can I would give them scrambled eggs as a group and make sure she gets a good share of it.
Sorry about the rough spot with the neighbor, I understand the need for patience as long as it isn't taken advantage of.

Eewwwe.... so are you going to find her a couple of days olds?

I still have to see if Sabrina gets her egg to hatch this week.
I'm going to candle the two Bonnie managed to get under her recently, and if they are developing, probably let her keep them.
:D I'm thinking someone will go in the broody breker. I wasn't ready for the whole coop to be broody!

Good morning all! Exploring the new page!
The last few weeks have had its issues. Got home late one night and a red sex link had been killed. I am thankful that the raccoon did not get my broody sitting on a clutch of eggs. Trapped the fiend and killed it. It was a female and part of me feels bad for its babies but the other part of me feels bad for my chickens.

So now I'm anxiously awaiting babies to hatch! And then of course I found my CCL hen in a bad way. Not sure what is wrong. Has some diarrhea stuck to her bum. So I was thinking egg bound but I didn't feel anything. Problem is I don't really know what I'm feeling for. I soaked her bum yesterday and separated her. Not sure what else to do . I don't want to lose her. I only have two CL and now only 1 EE who is my broody ( second was lost to raccoon I think...disappeared with no evidence.)

Ugh chickens!

So good to finally have BYC back!

So sorry to hear of many of your losses in the past few weeks :( :hugs

I had a couple questions regarding sheds... I found a used one for $500 - it's 10'x12' and needs a little bit of work on the door and maybe bottom edge of exterior walls... My questions are - is $500 a fair price? How much (average) does it cost to have a shed moved? Location is 10 miles from our house, if that helps.

I'm just trying to do my homework and calculate costs, and this is of course a new adventure, so any help is appreciated! :)

Ana is doing a wonderful job with her babies (as if there was any doubt!). She had all 5 of them coming out from under her to eat and drink this morning. I know it won't be long till she brings them out of the nest to free range and forage. I love having a reliable broody! My last hatch is due on Tuesday and I'm going to try to graft any boys to my silkie hen. She a first timer and has only been sitting for maybe a week so we'll see how that goes. I may try the welbar hen again too. Depends on what hatches.
