It has been quiet in here lately. What's everyone been doing? I'm not a fan of the chilly weather the past 2 days. Mostly because the kids are flipping out about not going to the pool lol.

I moved about 8 silkies and a pair of CCL out to the coop today. The silkies were NOT happy about the move but they will be in a few days when they start to free range

We... Did it... the coop itself is finally finished. And the big babies are outside. We lost another one but we shouldn't lose anymore. The run isn't built yet but they'll be okay till then in the coop. They have no idea what to do with all that room lol.

Was pretty upset last week, we were out of town for four days. We trusted the house to a caregiver that miserably failed to do anything. 8/18 fish dead, guinea pig nearly dead and surviving off of the water and calorie contents of a lettuce leaf. Emaciated and in a cage so soiled it harbored a fly nest and infested the bedroom. Hamster and mice thankfully had enough food hoarded to weather this but the mice were definitely dehydrated. Cats were noticeably thinner with a full litter box, leopard gecko has no food, water, or coconut moss for shedding, no humidity either. Shit stains and piss everywhere from a dog that isn't even ours and wasn't supposed to be here!

And our poor ducklings, stuck in the hen house for days, sleeping in the mud, drinking the mud, defecating in the mud... caked in their own feces, coughing, and starving. Keels and lumbar vertebrae prominent and ready to eat my whole hand. And needing niacin. Total and utter nightmare at the house. Very very disappointed.

We were able to nurse everyone back to health, and other than the fish no lives were claimed. Everyone was able to rebound fantastically. However, our oldest dog is now experiencing end-stage renal failure. It's looking really bad, but we hesitate to euthanize him on his birthday tomorrow.

Oh wow, I'm so sorry That's horrible! We're leaving for Oregon for a week and my BIL will be caring for all of our animals. He's used to caring for 1 cat :/ I'm extremely nervous.

It seems like after the site was migrated to this new software that things have not been as active. Maybe it's just my perspective because I haven't been on as much. The email notifications are not reliable, they seem pretty random about what gets sent out. i used to follow the emails and come here when a saw a post that I liked, now I don't see them until I remember to come here and check.

As for what I've been doing in the chicken world. I finished fixing up the last (4th) hoop tractor and loaded it with 39 young birds yesterday. Started with 40, but one pullet already found a way to kill herself within a few hours of getting in there. The rest seem pretty content with grass under their feet instead of bedding. I love to watch chickens on fresh grass. The Welbars see the dolly and run to the side they think the new grass will appear under. It's amusing.

My purchased birds are all doing great! The Genetic Hackle (Fly Tie) roo has decided to turn mean and we have it out on a regular basis. The bantam lavender ameraucana roo is the same way, but he's so small it's funny, not alarming. I grab him and hold him by the legs with 1 hand while collecting eggs with the other. They are both really pretty roos, and I have no replacements for them (yet), so I tolerate their indiscretions for now.

The ducklings were fed once within a span of four days at 11 weeks old. Not sure how they're still alive, but all are accounted for and healthy again.

The dog was not his fault, Benji has been struggling with kidney disease since January. He just so happens to be at the end now. Benji was actually taken to my grandmother's house where he was at least fed regularly. It's sad we can't get him a dog cake for his last birthday, he stopped eating two days ago. Still drinking a bit and peeing/pooping. We're debating how we will know it's his time.

I was on day 3 of my migraine. They stink! Thankfully, I don't get the vomiting I have heard that some people experience.

Any day the sun is out and I am home, I am playing (working) in the yard. The weeds grow so quickly, and I have so many projects to do since it's our first summer in the house. And of course I have to stop every once in a while to watch my chickens activities.... . And if it gets about 80-85, my butt is floating in our pool! Only bad part is the horse flies and mosquitoes.

Just got a couple, right? Haha! Did you get a variety pack, or specifically order all of those breeds?

That is very tempting, but I am going to wait for the Brabanters. I counted and I believe I still have 27 chicks that are growing up. I have a friend who wants a few females and maybe a Roo, and I'd like to have some more layers for myself, since the broody virus is strong here (4 right now that need breaking). Still not sure how many are Roos yet, but I think I will know in the next 2 weeks.

Wanted to let you know, the best broody by far has been the Bielefelder. Although they are quiet and gentle, she is very good at protecting the chicks. She is the only chicken who is still watching them during the day. I can tell she is near done, but I will definitely let her brood again in the future. The Wellbar is also an excellent brooder.

Hey turkey people! @dheltzel @Auroradream26 Do you think my Tom has bumblefoot? One of toes looked a little fatter than the rest on the roost, so I took a look at his feet. They look like they have poo caked on them, but I think he just has thick feet with tough callouses, because he is such a big boy now. I did soak his feet in Epsom salts to see if that would soften or remove anything. I think it just kept me up later.

I was inspecting feet the other night because I noticed my one Cali Gray had a case of swollen (bumblefoot). She had it on both feet, but only one was puffy. I soaked her feet last night in Epsom salts and used some Prid drawing salve on a gauze pad. By this morning, one of her gauze pads was off. Soaked again tonight and used some Vertericyn spray. I did excise some of the corn from the bad one, reapplied the drawing salve and bandaged her up. I'm glad I have time to give them TLC.

Tomorrow is my birthday, and I'm excited because I've been asking for a chainsaw. There are a lot of fallen trees in our woods and I'd love to be able to clear them.
