Someone told me that turkeys and chickens cannot share the same coop, fact or fiction?

I'm not sure if this has been answered yet - The risk of housing turkeys and chickens together is 'Black Head'. So in areas where Black Head is prevalent, you do not want to house them together. Mine run together and I haven't had any problems, but I house them seperately.

I heard this question come up at a class before and Dr. Greg Martin (Lancaster, PA Avian Vet) said something like, -'Different species should never be houses together because of the greater likelihood of disease being spread. Although, 'I' have been to many farms where chickens, turkeys and water fowl are houses together. People just do it, and it works for them. Commercial growers can not risk it.'

Thanks. Woke up today and did a head count in the light. Pretty sure all of my chickens are fine but on top of the ducklings I lost an east Indie. Pretty sure it was the male I was going to breed and at least two of my older Muscovy babies. Both of my blue barred that I was excited about. Found one ripped apart in creek. Ugh.

Really addicted to this new IP camera we bought. @dheltzel actually gave me the idea a few posts back when he posted a cam with temperature sensor.

First one I tried was $40 and had to go straight back, the reception hardly reached the coop and was terrible. 2nd one by Reolink is awesome, it has 2 antennae giving it a really strong signal. I track all eggs laid by each chicken to see who are the big producers and count days off for broken broodies, this camera is giving me even more opportunity to geek out on the chicken activities/stats.

For example: Over the past 2 days the blue and buff orpington and araucana have all laid at exactly the same time. I thought an egg takes 25hours to form, I less for some layers. The Blue Orpington and NHR sit and lays in 10minutes, whereas the Buff Orpington takes 90minutes! Our Legbar stood and watched our Welbar for 45 minutes while she laid (like Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston!), then with the coop to herself spent the next 45 minutes laying (they grew up together).

Its on the TV at home, it's on the iPad, I've been watching on the train, checking at work, on the dash in the car. Great fun!

I bought one too, but I haven't hooked it up yet. Looks like the one I bought needs wifi, but 'm hoping I can use the SD card slot instead. Good thing my hubby does IT work, so I can bug him about my chicken camera! :lau

@kie4 ... coop cameras are an awesome and addictive addition to a coop, for sure! Hubby uses them to check food and water levels and with sound enabled we know when birds are disturbed by anything. They are great for peace of mind when away for weekends also!

If my camera does not work for my coop, I may mount this and watch my parrots when I am at work.

I have heard this too, and I agree, it is for concern of blackhead. I house mine together. I know I am taking a chance, but I believe I have heard that Blackhead is not prevalent in this area. So far, so good, but it has been less than a year.

I need someone in Berks/Lancaster to process my rooster. He charged me when I opened the coop door this morning and came at me while I was still in the run. I beat him with my feed scoop. I don't take the stick in with me in the morning because I usually have enough time to get out.

You can do it yourself. It's really not that hard. Watch a few youtube videos and you will be fine.

Anyone have any tips for dealing with an owl? Pretty sure he got 4 ducklings since I've been gone.

So sorry, I don't have any help. Are you sure it is owls, if they are being attacked during the day? I thought most owls were nocturnal.

It seems that you guys with turkeys really like their personalities. How does that reconcile with their being meat birds? Or are they pets?

So far, mine are just pets. After seeing how friendly they can be, I don't know if I could process one. I guess if needs must...

Sure, blame me for your latest addiction . . .
I guess I'm responsible for a whole lot of "wasted" time and money when you consider how many chicks I've distributed.

Oh, I can blame you for more things all the time now! :smack

Just got back from my first trip away from birds. Lost 7 2 week old ducklings and I couldn't find one little Bantam rooster but it was dark. Pretty bummed about loosing my Welsh and my Muscovy Peking mix. Could have been worse I guess.

So sorry...:hugs I am going away for 4 days, but I am optimistic. I know my neighbor loves having the chickens and turkeys around.

Looky! My Lav Am started to lay! @dheltzel or anyone who knows anything about genetics....

If she is fertile from my Roo (CCL/Maran), is there any possibility of Lav. Chicks?

Hey guys! We are back from Michigan! So much happened ! I was so so sorry to hear about Stake. I always read his posts. My condolences to those who lost cholls and doggies (one of mine is 14 , but it was the younger one who got injured boarding with my vet!
11 pm the night before we left, the motor burned out on my chicken door. My sitter says all the girls are good but I am nervous. On the up side, I was able to buy a baby coronation sussex in Howell Michigan on our way home!

My husband and I are frequent visitors to your part of the state, in fact we are here for the week to fish and camp west of Erie. Getting ready to head out now.
