I'm soooo excited. I couldn't wait and candled the second batch of Australian Spotted duck eggs last night. They were only in 5 days, and the first setting of 2 eggs was a bust, but I definitely saw some red veining !!
These are my "pet project" (pun intended) this year. Last year was Genetic Hackles, this year is is these ducks. I have 5 females and most days I'm getting 4 eggs, sometimes 3. I was worried after the first 2 set were not fertile and switched out the male. Now it looks like that may not have been necessary, but I intend to switch males every few weeks anyway to get as much genetic diversity as I can from the 4 males.
Their eggs are surprisingly large for such small birds, they look a lot like the Legbar and Ameraucana eggs (yes, greenish blue in color). I have to label these (never have to label the Welsh Harlequin duck eggs). If they can lay for a long period, these could be a viable back yard egg producer.
I bet the ducklings are beyond cute! Call ducklings are certainly cute things, just rather delicate, these are supposed to be much more vigorous overall than Calls, but I will have to raise a few hundred before I can say for sure. . .

Nope, they are adorable but way too much cleaning involved when no good water source available for their entertainment and maintenance. Also I can't expand animal responsibilities when my work and camping schedule wouldn't let me provide the level of care and attention I believe they should have...I wont stretch it that thin. If/when we move to property over in Clarion county and have access to a water impoundment then I would consider them.
