Any ideas on what my mystery bantam chicks are from TSC? I was thinking tonight, perhaps bantam Cochins? That would be great actually. They are smaller than the silkie chicks even! There are 3 of the mystery breed, and they all have very feathered legs. It is hard to tell form the pictures, but they seem to have a gray tone to their fluff.

You know you’re a midget when you have to hide under a silkie! :lau

@Blarneyeggs My plan worked! ;) I even went back and got some more Silkies, so I am guaranteed to have a few females for a friend and myself. So the are 8 Silkies and 3 mystery birds.

So I put the new chicks in a plastic storage tote brooder, inside the pool with the rest of the chicks. They can see and hear each other, but are separated. The heat lamp is hanging over the new chicks, since the garage is pretty cool. The older chicks are still warmed by the lamp, and I still ha e the heating pad available for them.

But because the other chicks are 3 weeks old and little monkeys, I keep finding one or two that have jumped in with the babies. No problems, except they eat the food, lol. The new chicks are so small, I was nervous about them being trampled or pecked. But they all seem pretty comfortable, so I may try a few minutes of full integration tomorrow and see how it goes.

Oh my goodness, the chick fever is spreading! :celebrate:jumpy:love

Rest in Peace my pretty Daffodil. She was one of the first four baby chicks I ever bought. She survived the September Poodle Massacre by hiding under a peony bush, and botulism in December with a lot of support and a life of luxury inside my son's bedroom. This time she just was not getting better, even with crop feeding. I took her to the vet and then made the sad drive to New Bolton. They are impressive there. All the cultures aren't back yet, but she did have a lot of tumors. She was in the house 3 weeks this time, we miss her.

:hugs I am so sorry for your loss. It sounds like she had a wonderful life surrounded by love to the very end.

:hugs So sorry for your loss... :(

So I believe I may have a broody-ish hen...

She goes in, sits for about an hour, leaves. No egg. No sign of binding. Doesn't hiss if I go in near her. Maybe she's broken. :p:idunno

I am thinking of adding a few chicks this spring. If it ever shows up... Fiancee said we could probably just let the hens hatch some out, but they're not very consistent with their brooding. We would end up with mystery barnyard mixes, unless our Ameraucana decided to breed with our GLW. @dheltzel 's Blue Egg Black Sexlinks or Welbars however are quite appealing... :D

What a beautiful girl! Lovely eyes. If I get an Australorp, I may need to name her Mary Poppins in honor of your girl. I am so sorry for your loss. When I have met this breed they have been bird friendly birds, and the 'roos crowed continuously.
Congrats Fluffy on the new chicks! I have two Wyandottes. My Silver Laced (Phoenix)is from Jerry Foley and I really should have gotten two. She is dead lowest on the pecking order and the shyest to come for treats, although she is huge and gorgeous. The Gold-laced I stole from FangedKnight is a real favorite. She is little, pretty and gets along from every one and is the first to run up to me and my husband as the official greeter of the flock. She is a dependable layer.

I had heard the Wyandottes could be pushy in a mixed flock, but not these two!

Wyandottes are such pretty birds! I have a mixed flock... now 7 different breeds. I just love the variety!

It looks like both my muscovy ducks are broody. Ebony is ok, she'll nibble at your fingers and Corp when you reach in her nest. Quackers on the other hand is nuts! She starts huffing and hissing when you open the next box at all to collect any eggs. She actualy grabbed my coat and started violently kicking at my arm today lol. Wow!

I don't do well hatching under broodies. Both the Kraienkoppe pullets have been full on broody, so I put 8 eggs under them 3 weeks ago. I checked today and found 3 live chicks and 2 dead ones. Pulled the 3 live ones and put them in a brooder, since the broodies are not trustworthy.
Anyone interested in getting Kraienkopppes (aka Twentse) ? They are pretty, and very prolific and fertile, but I doubt they are going to "make the cut" to stay around past this year. I have lots of chicks though.

I may be convinced to take some extras home when I come out to pick up some ducklings. Wanted to let you know that the green eggs are in such demand in this area. A friend of mine with some of your birds sold 10 dozen eggs in 2 days just by advertising on Facebook.

I may want a couple more Blue egg layer, as the fox got some of my CCLs and BSL. :hmm
