Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I am planning the location of the quail pen. That in itself is enough to drive me insane. The place I was thinking is well protected, and near an outlet. No direct sunlight. I can move it out to the sidewalk, but... it’s the sidewalk. They need grass.
There is a nice place near another outlet... I have a few places to put them. I just wanted them near the house. I trust the chickens and ducks in the nasty weather, I don’t know quail yet.
Then there’s the rabbit hutch debate. It’s waaaaaaay away from outlets, and there are too many reasons to leave it where it is.
It would be so great though!
 I also need to decide how I’m fixing the prefab coop for the quail. Simple or better? :D I hope to decide this week, and start or complete it when we get into the forties next week. It’ll probably be raining, but I won’t melt.

Don't have to have grass, unless you want them to..know that sound "mean", but a lot of people raise them 'cage-only'...there is also the option of growing fodder for them..it's not like you are real busy or anything:smack
Would think just keeping them out of direct wind would be most important for them, but not an expert at raising them or anything else sooooo...

Oh, and I don’t do medicated feed. No coccidiosis here atm, but I have medicine if I need it. Yes to the water. They have electrolytes and vitamins.

see, your covered. Everyone has the way they do things and their reasons why and that's cool.:highfive:

Speaking of which, I set 23 quail eggs for you. My last hatch though, I set 63 and only about 30 developed. Hopefully this time will be better but I'm not holding my breath.

Mine are cage only. I've ripped clumps of grass out for them and they just trampled it and didn't seem interested in eating it
They stay in a rabbit hutch during the summer and this winter, they're in my big brooder in the screen porch with a heat lamp. They seem to do just fine in both spaces.

Cool, they do just fine in cage only raising. I don't know if they eat grass and such like chickens do...huh...got to look into them more.
DH and I do want rabbits/quail at some point. We are just trying to get the whole chicken area finished properly first, then we will be able to use part of the run to add another smaller "coop/cage" for them.
We were looking at just raising the quail through the spring-summer, processing in fall, starting back up new in spring again. Didn't want to have to worry about overwintering them ie. heat lamps.
Thinking it is going to be enough with chickens & rabbits. Keeping waters ice free & clean for those two animals will be enough for us.

Furnace is back up and running again. A clogged nozzel and blocked air flow were the culprits. We're now $150 lighter but I've been educated a little and we'll be able to take care of that on our own in the future. He said that now we should have better fuel economy and the furnace is running quieter than it used to.
Awesome!! So glad it wasn't too crazy $$ & it wasn't a "serious" fix!

I prefer they have grass and bugs to eat. I will now return to my gloom and despair that consumes me.
:bun here you go, maybe this will help you.:hugs

Got all the OOD pasta cooked up, put into portions & froze. Also had some OOD instant potatoes, they are cooked & ready for the birds tomorrow. Will just heat them up for the girls before giving it to them. Will warm them up two ways!
Some how giving this food to the birds seems less like a waste to me. At least it isn't in the trash.

With friends like you, who needs enemies? You’re right. I’m a lazy, worthless bum.

was looking into more quail info. Here is a nice site:

she made a whole sanctuary for her birds..really cool. Seeing this is changing my mind about things..hummm, DH is not going to like me..hahaha:lau
It is so neat & the ideas are endless what you could do...doesn't even have to be large, just a small corner of the yard. We still wouldn't have to keep them year round if we didn't want to. ...I am trying this out on all of you first, then going to make my case to the DH.:woot

That's actually really cool! I love it though hubby would kill me if I even tried to suggest this lol. He'd say that I have enough coops.

Me too! It's so nice to have the whole house at a steady temperature now lol

I knew it wouldn't last long. Ana (SPR) has gone broody for the first time this year. What I didn't expect is for her to tag team with Cynthia (BR turkey) and run a nest mutiny. They've completely hijacked Ebony's (Muscovy) nest and kicked her out. Now, if all goes well, I will have a turkey and a chicken working together to raise ducklings  You should've heard Cynthia fussing and whining when I moved her for a second to see if there were any extra eggs! What a nut!
