Hey all! I made a post recently about how we got a Marek's diagnosis a few months back, and I've decided to try to add to my flock and breed for resistance. So far it's going well, but only time will tell. There are Amish near me I can get chickens from who are likely exposed to the same diseases because of how close they are, but I was wondering if anyone had other breed types to recommend trying? So far I have barred rock, rhode island reds, black australorp and a buff orpington.

I wanted to try Egyptian Fayoumis, but they're not cold hardy and it does get pretty cold here. Does anyone have any of these in their flock?

I have Marek's in my flock too. I have lost most of my two year old hens due to the disease. All younger hens are vaccinated and haven't had any problem yet. If you are looking for Marek resistance chickens, Ideal has Ideal 236 chicken that is developed for resistance to Marek's disease.

Everyone pulls in and sets up their cages and pens and whatever with all their birds, goats, pigs or whatever else they decide to bring (no dog/cat sales permitted). We all just hang out, wander around to everyone's different setups, buy, sell, and trade. I usually have a canopy set up with all my hen saddles, decals, and sometimes tutus. This is the first one that we'll have at the park so I'm hoping a lot of people come. Here are a couple pictures from past swaps.

I have several ducks I am hoping to find good homes for. I currently have a flock of 21. Many of these ducks are rescues and have been with me for years. I want to see them go to a good home where they will be allowed to live out the remainder of their lives and not be killed. Good news.... Ebony (muscovy) has hatched an adorable little duckling with maybe a couple more on the way. Bad news, I had to borrow her from her nest to try on a saddle with wing guards to make sure it fits right for a custom order. She was very upset and angry, biting and everything, then she just left lose a huge broody poop ALL OVER my leg! That was the biggest and most disgusting thing I've EVER experienced!

@OneMountainAcres I am happy she is hatching and sorry your jeans took the brunt of her upset. Perhaps you should add a 'test fit' surcharge to your saddles, tell customers it is hazard pay! LOL

Maybe I should! It wouldn't have been as bad had I had jeans on...I was in comfy shorts so half landed on the shorts, the rest on my leg... and slid down I ended up taking the baby away. She's usually a great mom but she and a silkie hen have been too busy fighting over eggs that aren't going to hatch and not worrying about the baby. It was all alone on the coop floor :/

I have 4 muscovy hens, all over a year old now, and none show the slightest inclination to go broody. I made them an awesome nest, but they ignore that and only lay in the plain nestbox I put inside for the guineas (who only lay on the floor anyway).
Seem I have defective muscovies . . .
