people that just walk into your house unannounced- why?????

Did your foster kids tell them where you lived? When we were foster parents our address and phone was confidential. Of course we stayed with kids under 7. We did watch to be sure we weren't followed because we were concerned about that.

they are not supposed to.... we now tell our kids not to have family or friends show up unannounced or somebody they love might wind up dead... our kids are usually 14+ in age though. The one father was intent on shooting is daughter who had him imprisoned years before. Now I am a bit paranoid

Yes we don't knock on Family doors, well those real close. my sons, grandkids, brothers Sister, never did at Mom and Dads.

Now stranger better not stop in the yard without callig first

If they are a stranger would they know your number?

The dogs announce somebody is here and people always knock.
Would they walk in if I wasn't home? that depends, if the dogs know them and like them as we never lock our door.
Our close friends know if they need a phone or help they can just walk in if we are not home but as I said it depends on the dogs (and one cat)

Different families, different cultures.

Even when I have family (who do not actually live with me) that has a key to my house they would never just walk in without first announcing their presence. Heck, even my wife and kids will say "Hello! I'm home" if they've been away and have come back. It's not the walking in uninvited part that is dangerous (for them), they either live there or are always welcome. It's the surprising the person who was already in the house when they suddenly just appear where they were not known to be immediately before. If I've been to town or something and come home after dark I ALWAYS announce my presence as I walk through the door. Having taught my wife how to shoot it would be embarrassing to have her shoot me!

I manage a large apartment complex (chickens are at moms) The last phase of the complex was supposed to include the office....it was never built.

I HAVE to keep my door locked at all times even though it is a door that matches all the rest of the doors and says PRIVATE RESIDENCE or people walk right on it. Now you would think the fact they walk in to my kitchen or living room might give them the clue that this is not the office............but having found a couple hanging out in my living room when I was in the shower (you can hear the water from the living room) I know I HAVE to keep that door locked at all times.

Ps.....if you have a relative that has an emergency key and thinks it is an open invite to come on in, change the locks. Make up a good reason and forget to make them a key copy...............I had to do this with my own Mom, I no longer enjoy random people dropping by (see above) but Mom had a key and I was out of town, so she brought her friend over for a tour of MY place. The friend liked a bird house and was going to take it home with her! Thankfully, the decided maybe they should ask first, I said NO you can not have the bird house my son made in scouts!

You got in in a nutshell!

Respect for others. We hear a lot these days about people demanding respect for themselves and their rights' but not so much about respect for others and their rights.
