people with house chickens

As long as you are only feeding the poultry food grit is not normally needed (although I haven't used pellets) however if you're going to be giving any sort of treats it's really best to stay on the safe side and provide it or let them have some access to the outdoors where they can find it themselves. Most feed stores carry poultry grit. I haven't used aquarium gravel as grit as it sometimes can have a coating or dyes on the outside and I've heard people say the gravel is too smooth to grind the food up properly. Anybody have any experience with it?

Sunni eats pellets, but she doesn't eat grit. She has to eat pellets due to her disability, and I have tried giving her grit on several occasions, but the little rocks get stuck around her windpipe, since she doesnt have a to tongue to guide the grit down. It's overall not a very good situation when I give it to her. But she does fine without the grit. Her crop is empty every morning when she gets up, and her poops are always normal and solid.

I'm not saying your chickens won't need grit if you give them pellets, but Sunni does fine without it. :) So I personally wouldn't be too worried about it.

Okay that's good to kn

Okay that's good to know. I had a hen who ate pellets and never grit and she was fine. I just get worried bc I lost a rooster to an impacted crop bc I never gave him grit. Thanks for all the advice everyone. I also wanted to know why chickens stand in the sunlight and open their wings. Anyone know what that's all about?

That's called sun bathing :)

Everyday is spa day if you're a chicken.

iluvcks: Thank you so much for this Thread! I started my own Thread just to introduce myself and the kids we have! I'm still learning how to navigate this forum! LOL I joined BYC due to a RIR hen I have. I posted the story on the New Comers Thread. It's important info! Please read it. I don't want anyone to go thru what I've gone thru with her. If I'd ONLY known?

Other than one large Moran Rooster! Which he is a loveable guy! We hold him and scratch around his waddles and cone all the time. He loves it! Our three silkies, (two hens and one rooster), one RIR hen and Moran Hen live in our house with us! :) The one pound Silkie hen - Maria - is the ruler of the house though! She is the white hen in my Avatar. She is SUCH a sweetheart and we have to spell words around her because she knows what they mean! Like outside, bugs, cricket, bed/night night time, grass and many more! She loves both of us, but is 100% a Daddy's girl! She sleeps on a pillow underneath a baby blanket beside her daddy in bed all night long. We put an ice pack underneath a towel for her to stand on so she doesn't get too hot being covered up. She goes riding with us in the car/truck when daddy is out Tornado Watching. She's afraid of storms! Her picture has been taken so many times due to being out with us when we are Tornado watching that her picture has been sent out many many times by strangers. Hubby is a Ham Operator and reports in on storm damage and calls in when a Tornado is spotted. We don't chase Tornados!

Moran Rooster - Marvin
Moran Hen - Martha Mae
RIR Hen - Dorothy
Silkie rooster - Cotton
White Silkie Hen - Maria
Blue Silkie Hen - Molly
