people with house chickens

I'm so glad to find a forum about house chickens! I have a single 2 year old roo (no flock and no hens since he was a baby chick) and he's quite clingy in the best ways possible. He just loves to be cuddled, you wont even believe how affectionate he can get. I have to expel him to our small balcony most of the time though because my parents don't appreciate him defecating all over the house, but sometimes I sneak him inside and take naps with him. He likes having "dust baths" on a rug near our sofas which I find hilarious. Another hilarious thing is when I tell people that I have a pet chicken hidden inside a condominium instead of the usual dog or cat. He's such a sweetheart,kinda hard headed sometimes and awfully clingy (very clingy actually which makes me feel bad for having to leave him outside

). It's really sad that I have to keep him outside because he does enjoy it greatly to be inside the house. Either way I love him dearly and I hope my parents wouldn't be so against him coming inside!!

Post a pic of him! Does he crow a lot? Chickens make very nice house pets. We had a juvenile Silkie in-house for 3 months. I custom-made a couple chicken diapers for her. When one diaper might get soaked from a messy poop I had a 2nd dry one to put on her -- at night she slept in her special chair all night on a towel so she didn't need a diaper then. Once she layed an egg in a diaper. I had to baby shampoo and blowdry her tush with each diaper change but it keeps the vent area from getting irritated. It takes a few tries to get the chicken accustomed to moving around in the diaper but once they do it saves a lot of time cleaning floors.

Anyone know what this may be

I can't tell if it is soft or not tried to us tweezera but seems part of the beek I just don't lmremaeamber seeing it there it is some thing I should worry about

Are you referring to the white spot? My house chicken got something very similar, though her beak is naturally light and her spot was brown. It was hard and I thought it might be removable at first as well, but eventually I found all I did was make it bleed slightly. It was an abnormal lump so I took her right to the vet, I've dealt with cancer on the face in a chick as young as 4 weeks so I was very worried for her. They didn't have a clue but suspected it was trauma, when a symmetrical spot began to develop on the other side it seemed like perhaps she'd bitten on to something that rubbed her very roughly or burned her. We put her on antibiotics as a precaution and scoured the house to beyond-baby-proof it, but I think what did the trick was betadine solution (diluted down to a weak tea color) applied to the spot several times a day to keep it clean. I would try that and if it doesn't go down or gets significantly worse it is probably time for her to see a vet. Trauma should heal.

Ok guys.I have two chickens that are halfway house chickens.They come in when its cold.But, what do ou guys do for when they poop?When not using a diaper?Do you train them to use the litter box like a cat or a potbellied pig?Orwhat?

Our chickens are half-house chickens too. They like to visit us in the kitchen because they know that's where the food comes from. I have tile floors and we set up flat cardboard walls to keep the chickens in the sections we want them to stay -- that way the poops are easy to clean up off tile floors. On some places where there are area rugs we cover with large beach or bath towels and launder later. We also used the dog kennel panel wall sections in lieu of cardboard but we like the lightweight cardboard -- easier to move around and tuck in a corner or store on the porch.

As to training chickens for litter boxes, tell us if you can get that to work LOL! Chickens poop approx every 15 minutes!

I think your right she had been shaking her head at night one and a while and when she was she was hitting my bed post that is made of mettle

I've got an extra large dog kennel that we call "Chicken Jail." Anyone without a diaper goes in there! The tray is easy to pop out and hose off in the backyard. Usually they are in there to dry off after a bath, when their diapers are being laundered, or just to give their bums a break. If not confined the only solution I've found is a roll of paper towels, some cleaner and lots of poop pick-up rounds.

In our last house the chicken room had a linoleum floor so they only wore diapers when they left that room. I would sweep up everything dry and then mop away the rest twice a day with hot water and bleach. Had to get a real nice mop from a janitor supply shop and looooots of mop heads for that, though. Also I had a paint scraper for any stubborn stickers which were usually cecals, those are always best to wipe up when they're fresh no matter what. This was for one standard hen and a bantam rooster.

Ya the poop factor kinda seperates their bounderies. I am sure that if they did not poop so much (and if our house was not so small) then perhaps they could come in every once in a while to vist, but cleaning up poo off the carpet dose not sound to appealing, and I know changing 7 chicken diapers is not either....

did you make the diapers for the chickens or did you buy them. How do you get themy on the chickens? I have one that runs around and poops all the time.
