people with house chickens

Henry was hatched as a class project and was part of a variety box and most were rooster and were aggressive despite being hand reared and I didn't want him having his neck ring like the rest of the roo's so I took him in :)

OMG, so happy to have found this group!!! I love my babies. I have a pair of white Silkies: Daisie Mae and Russell Crow. They are so adorable and I will never put them outside! I guess I need to find a place in our huge den for their crate. Private heat and air :) Right now the other 3 ladies are roaming the mostly unheated Den. Bedding of pine shavings a feeder and waterer. They love the stairs too. Our home is a very large very old southern home in need of remodeling and the flooring is linoleum so its easy to clean up. I hold, talk to, pet and play with all my chickens every day. I just lost one to a gizzard impaction and am so sad not to see Betsy charging the door when I open it to come play with them. I got another lamp and have put up roosts so they dont lay on the cold floor. Which may have contibuted to Betsy's problem, but I didn't know at the time.

Teazle333, what do you bathe bluebelle with? My silkies need a bath but I don't know what to use. The other question is, do you blow dry her, towel dry or what?

When I have bathed Sunni I just use warm water, no soap. If she were dirty, then I would a tiny bit of baby shampoo. If her feathers ever get messy after wearing her diaper, I use the baby shampoo and the smell and color comes right out. I have tried just holding Sunni in a towel until she's dry, but she is so energetic that she couldn't sit still that long. So I use a blow dryer. I just make sure that it is on the lowest heat and the lowest fan speed. You also want to make sure that you don't leave the blow dryer on one spot of their feathers too long. Keep it moving. Chickens skin is very sensitive. :)

I would bath your babies with baby shampoo or a dog and cat flea shampoo or a tea tree one designed for small pets as I would blow dry its cold and your silkies are tolerant otherwise it will probably freak then out. I would warp the in a towel first to absorb excess water.

Put the drier on a low setting and lift the feathers to dry better keep checking the temperature or they could get nasty burns :(

If its a warm day then they an dry naturally but I would bath them in the morning or they will get ill overnight.

I sometimes wrap Bluebelle in a towel and let her dry off on the sofa watching DR Dolittle haha her fave film !!! But in general I go with blow drying :)

I personally think chickens do not get enough respect, they may not be border collie smart but what they know they know very well and the are very loyal x :)

OMG It looks like you have a spoiled house chicken! Lol!

Tea tree oil smells like that cold medicine from TSC. They may like that. A sauna with it and only bathe the soiled areas. Their foot featers get it the worst. Poo magnets lol Just fed Russell some scrambled eggs. He loves them and his wifie lays almost 7 days/wk.

Hello everyone! Glad to find this thread via a very nice welcoming person who sent me a link. I have a house chicken and a house turkey! Its alot of up keep but its worth it.. Eggnog is my chicken i just got her from a friend she had a toe pecked off and another almost pecked off.. She couldn't keep her any more so she came to me and she decided she wanted to be a house chicken soo i just went with it. And since i already had a house turkey it was easy to adjust them together my house turkey is named little wing but we call her lurk or lurkey! Had her since she was a week old.. She couldn't walk and needed therapy which she got along with bi weekly injections for joint support cuz shes a broad breasted white and they are very heavy.. 30lbs
