people with house chickens

My rooster Rover had this phase. he would peck feet, bite, chase people around. It takes time. hangout with him, scold him when he bites (but be prepared for many of them) walk around with him in your arms. be the boss, but don't make the little guy hate you. just try to balance him out and it will work. I've read too many posts that say don't bother and eat him. these people are not willing to put in the time to change their rooster, forget the negativity and do anything and everything you think will work. only you know how he will respond to things. Rover snuggles. literally stretches out his neck and snuggles. it calms him down. if you had asked me a year ago if snuggling with a rooster would help him sleep, I would have thought you were crazy. good luck with him, and don't think about chicken dinners too much.

Thank you!
He is much better today. He kept flying onto my lap to sit down and watch TV with me. He hasn't even bitten or attacked anyone today! I'm so glad. I hate it when people tell me to kill him. Ive raised him since he was a baby and there is no way I could even think about just giving him away.

some people just don't get it when you say "House chicken" they aren't production hens you clean once a day and feed every so often. there is no such thing as "sometimes you lose one" or "looks like he needs to be culled." We raise them from the size of an egg, we eat with them, sit with them, learn their individuality. Its a companion thing. they become part of our life. People don't get it. but we do. Thank everyone here. they all deserve it

Thank you! I'm glad you and these people here understand what I'm talking about. Other people think he is an outside rooster that I bring in occasionally. They don't know he sleeps right next to my bed and actually likes his diaper. I guess some people just don't understand it. They see animals as food or just things to buy. I see animals as best friends, and i'm sure everyone else here does too. As soon as I saw that abandoned 2 week-old chicken stuck under the barn, I knew I couldn't put him back outside or he would be hawk food. Of course I threaten to put him outside when he gets in a mood, but he is still my baby. I try to explain that to people but they don't understand. Again, thank you and everyone here. Back in October, we thought we were gonna move across the country. My mom said we might not be able to take him, and that just made me go into tears. The thought of just getting rid of him kills me. I still don't understand how people can raise a chicken from a baby and then slice it open and cook it. I guess its just us, lol.

Its actually pretty easy. You shouldn't trash folks, you asked a question in a forum where many of us raise our own meat (from babies to table) we also care for and process them, and we do it with reverence for the animal and the life it gives to put food on our tables. Many people go to the grocery store and buy their meat, never understanding what it takes to get the animal there and that the animal they eat was not treated for the most part humanely. I don't judge folks for having house pets, its a choice, but don't trash folks for deciding to raise what we ourselves consume.. Does that make us horrible cruel people? absolutely not., its a way of life. If its a pet then its a pet. Blanket statements such as this have no place here and only serve to cause problems within the forum.

I was not "trashing". I said I do not understand how people can do it. I did not say you were "cruel" or "horrible". I think that you are looking for an argument by saying that and posting that picture. I was also having a conversation with someone. I am raising my rooster as a pet, the same as people have cats or dogs for pets. I am not a vegetarian, but I would no sooner eat this rooster than eat one of my dogs or horses. This thread is for people with house chickens, not for people who are raising them for meat.

I don't need to start an argument, just stating the fact about what was said, you actually did get some good advice, pretty much the same you got here, some (me included) do not deal with aggressive animals of any kind, that's our choice, you ask a question in a forum that many of us visit and we responded with how we deal with these situations., I came by this thread out of chance.. I did not post this as anything other than to point out the obvious. Your right, this thread is for people with house chickens and is where you should have brought your question first. By saying you got a lot of negative responses was wrong, they weren't negative, just honest.

Um, Hi everyone...is it safe to jump in here? LOL...lets not get our feathers in an uproar eh? I just had the same convo on another thread in this forum. Yes I do love chicken nuggets with a passion. Would i ever ever eat my own, hell no....having said that...i just wanted to jump in and report that Faith is doing really well and is still out in the coop with the big kids. And I miss her...apparently she doesn;t miss me thougn. I dont know if i ever explained what drew me to this forum before. I don't have just one house chicken, i have nine. yes 9/ But not full timers. I rotate them out one a day so i can spend quality time with each one individually. I try to rotate them but if one is sick, or in Faithys case eggbound then she gets to stay in with me. I cant afford diapers for them,. heck its touch and go sometimes whether i can even afford food for them they eat so **** much. Well if it actually did come down to it, they would eat, i wouldn't. but its been pretty close sometimes day before payday. Not only do I have 9 chickens but 10 nearly grown Guinea Fowl that I raised from an hour or two old....so those are my qualifications for making "people with house chickens" kinda my go to forum. Not that anyone asked, but I do enjoy babbling on like a moron...Catch me sometime after a tequila night and I don't stop. Just ask my dog. Anywho. I just wanted to try and salvage our thread here. We have a lot of good people that are regulars and some that come and go...but usuallly everyone here is really nice and really helpful and i don't want to see that end. We are like family now alot of us. United by our common love for a bird that most people woudn't look twice at, but should. Ok I will jump down offf my soap box now hope everyone is doing ok and have a good night....

Kyle I just wanted to say that i liked what you wrote. Some people dont' understand....you seem toget it though. I am not trying to start a war here and this is in no way any reference to the whole chicken dinner argumment a few posts ago, just so were clear. All i can speak for is myself. I'm tenderhearted and love animals. I can't even eat eggs anymore since owning chickens. sad huh. But I have absolutewly no prob cruisin through the drive up at McDonalds and ordering nuggets....come to think though, those probably arent even chicken lol. But im just saying that this is what i love about this forum in particular is that people here understand me. i love my birds, cant and wont eat them for any reason...butI know that some people can and do raise their chickens for food. But I think they start aout knowing that it is going to be a menu item. not me. I am married to an avid hunter and fisherman. I am also going to school for vet tech. So you see, I have a battle in my own home. I'm learning how to save them and he's trying to figure out new ways to blow them up ha ha. We are a unique breed of people here and I am greatful that there are others out there like me. People with house chickens rule!
