people with house chickens

That's why I wanted a goose. a protection animal. I'm hoping the turkeys... will play that roll somewhat. I've heard they do okay in that capacity as well. But either way, I love turkey meat. ;) Yes, turkeys are somewhat protective but geese outdo all other poultry. If you do get geese it has to be at least a couple since they are flock mentality just like chickens and ducks.

I love goats milk, so the goats will be for milking, and with the amount of almond milk my kids go through and the cost of goats milk in the store, between selling the babies, eating a few, we'll end up saving a lot of milk. Once Mom's goats ate the sleeves off Pop's laundry hanging on the outdoor clothesline I noticed the goats were re-homed rather promptly

. I love sheep's cheese and have to settle for Trader Joe's to get it since I'm not zoned for larger livestock in my tiny backyard

A lot of the broodier birds will stop laying for long periods, so I need to have a good flock of regular layers in order to get enough eggs to actually eat them on a regular basis. We still end up having to buy store bought eggs, because our RIR is the only one who lays on a regular basis. Even when my cochin wasn't broody, she only laid 3-4 eggs a week, at the most. I figured once I re-homed all my assertive dual purpose and layer chickens I was never going to see much eggs. Then we happened to get a Blue Breda who has been a laying machine of 4 to 6 eggs/weekly for 10 consecutive months in just her first cycle. She was such a pleasant surprise being a good layer, non-broody, plus a non-combative breed with the Silkies that I got another Breda this month. My Silkies are old and not much eggs -- so the active and gentle Breda has been great to add.

Here, since were on the topic of house chickens....

LOL

I wanted sheep, but my husband wasn't sold on the idea of milking them, but goats he's more okay with. Kids can drink the goats milk, so i'm happy with that.

Is that a Poodle? I love poodles. I think they come under Border Collie for top 10 intelligent dogs. How old is yours?

She's just a baby then! What a great choice for a flock guardian! What sort of training are you putting her through?
what I like to call boundaries, respect and hot dog training. LOL you teach them not to jump on you, or mouth you and respect your space, and that of other animals. And you use hotdogs to teach the recall command. Great pyr's are known for not being very obedience trained, because they "do whatever they want." so for breeds like this, their recall command has to have some reason to make them WANT to come to you... so for her, "hot dogs" is her recall command. LOL and I don't call her, unless I plan on paying up.

She sits, and lays down now, and she's respectful of most of the animals and kids. she's extremely gentle for being 4 months old and a puppy.

After she's spayed and gets her rabies shot, I'l spend some time taking her out in public to lowes, home depot, TSC, etc, for people socialization and make sure my kid's friends are introduced to keep her "people safe." as much as possible.
These dog's are known to dislike strangers immensely once they bond to a family unit and claim a territory.

Guardian breeds are known to be family friendly and stranger wary - Pyrs, Ovcharka, Mountain shepherds, etc etc. The family kids can roll around with these gentle giants or ride them and guardians are so tolerant of the kids. But they are independent thinkers so training is a must. Show pics when your girl matures

We are still figuring out how many shelves to put in there for them.

but they seemed to like their new home.

i think we'll probably put one more shelf, and put a nesting box in the middle shelf, and food/water on the bottom once they are full grown. We got it functional, we just have to tweak it to suit them now.

I also have a rabbit cage, to take them outside once they are bigger, so they can forage in the grass safely.

Our temporary house chicken - a juvenile Cuckoo Breda (breed has no comb only a triangle tassle crest but has vulture hocks and feathered toes) - very docile bird. She will eventually grow wattles too.
