Hello everyone! I have to bring my baby girl into the house in about a week or two, as soon as the mites have cleared up completely. She is Lakenvelder/Star Sussex, I think. She has been severely attacked by my Australorp, Shotgun, twice. And the last time was the last straw, because it turned out bloody. I was going to bring in Shotgun, but she protects the rest of the flock, so my only choice is to bring Lightning in.

So I was wondering how big did her cage have to be( the one she sleeps in or goes in when I'm running errands). I have an XL Dog Crate, will that work?

During the day when I'm upstairs(which is almost all day long) she is free roam in my huge room 15x45 ft room. When I am downstairs, she will go in the pen. When I leave she will be put in her cage. Also, she will have at least 2 hours of outside time per day.

Is this schedule ok or not? If you have any tips or anything please let me know.

In her cage she will have a nest box, hidey house, toys, sand/dust bath, and a couple perches. If you have any DIY toy ideas, please let me know. She is a very smart chicken, she knows Jump, Come, Her name, Down, and Up.

Hi There! I also had a XL dog crate for my girl..she was a Bantam Cochin. Sadly we lost her in January at 4 years old. Anyway..pretty much had the same set up...roamed freely when we were home and she was in her house when we were out. She did just fine....and we gave her outside time throughout the day. She actually developed a little schedule and would ask to go out first thing in the morning for maybe 30 minutes or so, in the afternoon for a few hours and once more right before dark. She wasn't much for toys but just enjoyed hanging out with her people

She would just stand at the door and call us..LOL! She was always happy and we loved having her inside with us

When we keep a quarantined new juvenile or have an injured or ill chicken, we have a 4x4 dog kennel that we bring out -- it has a door for easy in/out access or for us to clean it. The kennel is usually only for sleeping at night. The daylight hours we keep the door open so the chicken can choose to stay in it or roam the house freely. Of course we block the doors to rooms we don't want the chicken to go to and cover area rugs with large bath towels to capture poop - pick up the poop often and the towels launder great. The rest of our floors are tile and easy clean-up. Everyone's house is different and you need to work out what works for you.

I am sorry for your loss. That's the worst part of any animal ownership. Thank you for answering my post. We decided to bring our Lightning in yesterday, because she had her comb halfway off. She laid in my lap for about three hours and than she started to explore. That's when I put her diaper on, and let her explore. She loves sitting on the back of the couch! And then she stretched! It was thee cutest thing ever! Also, I hope you have a great day!

She laid in my lap for about three hours and than she started to explore. That's when I put her diaper on, and let her explore. She loves sitting on the back of the couch! And then she stretched! My bantam Napoliana dislikes her diaper. It seems too big and bulky. Sometimes she sees me holding it and she gets mad and stomps off back in her coop. I need to find a lighter version less bulky that fits her better
