people with house chickens

I love this thread! I don't know why, but I just do! I wish I had a house chicken!

My Speckled Sussex "Gobbles the Explorer" comes inside every now and then - to pick out some tunes and eat a little scratch treat.

I can't wait to see the expression on her face the next time she comes in and sees the brooder full of her future flockmates.

I got some chickens for eggs and as a hobby. Being a 59 year old male, I was determined to make this a matter-of-fact undertaking and thought it was silly how people treat chickens like pets! I figured every chicken was like another, and at any rate they have a brain the size of a pea and aren't that bright. I was wrong. They are appealing, (if not extremely bright like a sheepdog or something.) They actually have individual personalities! I find myself caring about them more than I expected.

I'm new to this thread, but I have an indoor Boo, too.

He's a nearly 2 yr. old Serama. He was the only one to hatch out of the first batch of Serama eggs I ever incubated, and he just sorta stuck to me. LOL Even now, he will always follow me around, and my mom tells me when he hears my car pull in he starts chattering and crowing. He likes to sneak ice cream and coffee whenever he can get away with it, and perches on the back of my chair every night until it's time for bed and I put him in his cage.

I love my BooBoo dearly... such a funny little man.

Dbass- Thank you. I love all my girls, but the indoor girls have a special place in my heart. They are beautiful

I'm sorry you got a crappy Email from someone. Some people just astound me with their ignorance and intollerance.

thndrdancr- I can relate with the food mess

Big Sky Country- Gobbles is so pretty. I love a curvy bird

ktkoening6- Callie is a cutie. My Buff Orphingtons are my favorites of my flock so far. Very sweet, and not as demanding as the RIR's. The Cochins are sweet, but I didn't get them untill they were grown so I'm not as attached. The silkies are in their own class, and the babies are at that stage... you know, a face only a mother could love. LOL

Jeffomatic- Aaaaahhhh, your turning soft

You luv them. And they love you

I have had chickens a year now. It only took about 6 weeks and I gave up eating all chicken. Now its all meat. Watch out...you may end up like one of us.

mayapooh- BooBoo has it good

If you can't bring the chickens in...Go to the chickens

Thanks, yes I agree that people are ignorant sometimes. Especially about chickens. I've actually worried off and on (from all the negative comments) if I should put them outside. But they are just like little kittens (IMO) Shirley sits in my lap while I pet her feathers and its relaxing for both of them. I just love em. They make me happy everyday! Sorry I'm a little loopy, gallbladder surgery yesterday and think the meds are making me sappy LOL!

my dh gave me the ultimatum and told me that the birds need to be out of our living space this weekend! i have (15) 10 weeks old chicks in the basement in a 3'x8' pen and i've been waiting for the weather on the weekends to be better to move them. 1 bantam polish roo who is my house boy. 1 hen is still brooding over eggs in my livingroom in a dog crate and i'm not sure the eggs are even going to hatch! and 2 chicks are in my dining room since one has an issue with it's eye. it was getting picked on so i had to give it a gentle roommate and that ended up being one of my bantam cochin cockerels who i'll probably end up keeping since he is a little sweetie!

so my total count for inside birds is: 2 adults and 17 chicks!

and then there is 13 adults outside in the coop.

The 10 weekers can go outside, but as far as I understand they can't actually be with the big girls untill they are all the same size. You have to have a way to seperate them within the coop. And a seperate run also. Mama cant go outside if shes on eggs. I have never hatched out eggs, but at some point can't you candle them to see if they are viable. if they are good you have to let hr hatch them then raise them. If they are bad... well she'll have to get over the broodyness. The ones with health problems can't be expected to go back outside. We have had Gabby in the house since she was attacked in December. She may never go back outside. She no longer believes she is a chicken.

So just what is his ultamative? Thats sad that he would even do that. Doesnt he relieze how important your girls are to you?
