Perch Construction

Pretty similar to several others here. I use this for chicks (for practice) and hens in isolation. It's 100% scrap wood. Ends are triangular only because I had matching triangles of wood sitting around (rectangle, square etc are fine) and the octagonal dowel came from an old coop, but you could easily use a 2" thick tree branch as well. 2 recycled deck screws into each end for stability.

this is simple and brilliant!

UPDATE #2. I am surprised it actually fits. Unfortunately, I did spend alot more money on this than I would have if I made my own. Since it was already shipped to my house, I though I might as well use it rather than go through the trouble of returning it.

UPDATE #3

My chickens are not using it and I don't know why. Maybe they never learned how to perch? They were 20 WK pullets when I go them and I didn't pay attention to if they had perches at the farm I got them from.

In the past few months I have had them I only saw them "perch" on top of their run (wire and hardware cloth) or on top of the milk crates.

I thought perching would be instinctual. Maybe they dont know what it is?

It's only been a day?

Put some of those crates they like under the new roost.
Maybe stack a couple-few.

It may take them a few days to check it out. From my limited experience - every chicken is different, just like children! Some will be curious and check it out immediately (especially my easter eggers). Others will only follow when someone starts. And as soon as a few start to perch, they will all attempt to try it out!
