Aoxa.... there is no way i could keep a swimming pool around my Silkies... they would have drowned themselves the first day....
Oldchick...... they aren't high maintenance if you think like a Silkie and keep things simple and Silkie proof...... kind of like kids. Many of my Pet Q ones are a lot better at stuff because they can see. I even have a few Silkie hens that can whip the tar out of any rooster - the roosters get confused about the whirling shrieking ball of fluff and gives up.... LOL Seems like the bigger the topknot, the more it pushes on the empty spot on the skull, hence their brain...... even had one with a puff that got so big she almost starved herself because she couldn't see..... she was in the same cage she had always been in..... ( I've had blind hens with less problems) I finally cut her "Bangs" and all was well with the Silkie world again......
To think Like a Silkie for those that don't:
Cover the corners of the cage so predators can't reach in to grab... or Silkie can't stick head out and temp predator...... Silkies love to pile in corners
Keep roosts low and add stairs if you can get your Silkie to perch...most prefer to sleep under the roost and get pooed on by others.
Keep water shallow to prevent drowning - Silkies seem to be able to drown themselves in very little water... and they like to wear it
Put out lots of food bowls if you have a large pen.... so none get lost... hehe Make sure they can not flip over the pan and get trapped.....
Do not let your Silkies go out in the rain, many can not find their way back and will huddle in a corner and freeze.......
Rules of the Silkie.
