pergo or hardwood ?

mr. birdaholic :

Compressed Multi-density fiber board with a laminate wood covering.

theres that kind, or a hard coated plastic coating with the impression and print of real wood, but it's not real wood. This is what the OP is referring to. It holds up good, but looks cheap, and cannot be used in really wet areas like a bathroom.

They come in planks and snap-lock together with matching toung and groves on the ends and sides. The floor floats allowing for expansion and contraction of the materials. You have to put down a vapor barrior and or a thin pad depending on the floor, some come with a pre-attached pad. It's great for a do-it- yourself project and you can put a floor down in no time at all vs real hardwood.

thanks its just called laminate here, i think it depends on the quality if you buy budjet it is fine for bedrooms or low use rooms but soon show wear in main living rooms. given a choice i would go hardwood even with a dog, its much warmer and if necessary can be sanded back and refinished.

I have had the pergo and its great holds up much better to kids and dogs than hardwood does, that being said I mean pergo not other brands made the mistake of buying different brand that was on sale. Now two years later it's chipping and coming apart. Oh well learned my lesson the hard way will be replacing with pergo.

I have Pergo and my daughter has hardwood. Her's scratches from dog toenails and mine doesn't. I'd get Pergo if you want it to look brand new years from now. JMHO

Ummm, while I personally agree that hardwood is better, that is not what the posts have said. Laminate looks like laminate. If you want it to look like wood, use wood. If you want something that will not show scratches and will hold up well, use porcelain or ceramic tile (and for the genetic purists, porcelain tile does NOT have the mottle gene).

Realize that with both laminate and hardwood and engineered hardwood, there is a HUGE range of quality of each product type that will make more of a difference in scratch resistance (or the lack thereof) than between the different product types. Hardwood and engineered hardwood can be sanded and refinished. The engineered, though can only be done a few times. With either, the type of wood makes a difference: some woods are very hard, some are fairly soft. And the finish it self can be of varying thickness and hardness.

Maybe get big foot socks for hte dogs, and as they run, slip and slide through the house, they can dust the floor and buff it to a shine

I would go with Pergo, myself. We put laminate in one of the rooms upstairs and it has held up really well. Looks brand new after several years. I clean it with the same stuff I use on all the floors, nothing special. The hardwood downstairs is scratched, stained and need refinishing badly, but that is just so messy! The Pergo we put in in one afternoon. The hardwood took days. My choice would be Pergo, but that's just me.
