i dont know chicken breeds very well, we've only ever bought chickens from a big commercial supplier and they're a cross breed designed for high egg production - great chooks, tough as old boots and and egg a day like clockwork, rusty red or red with a bit of white.

but i love the look of the black and white spotty ones - what are they? are they good layers? how hardy are they?

Spotty black and white? Hmm...there are a few types like that. Maybe Ancona or Exchequer Leghorn?

Ancona:

Exchequer Leghorn:

ooooh pretty! but no

they have like neatly overlapping black and white feathers

i've seen a picture somewhere here but i've wandered around so much i can figure out where

i'll go have another look

That's a silver sebright! There is also another breed that has that type of feathers that is less of a ornamental bantam and lays better- silver laced wyandotte (shown below)

But yeah, Silver Sebrights are poor layers and very small. They're bantams, and are more of an ornamental chicken. I would definitally recommend the wyandotte if your looking for a large fowl, good layer chicken. I have one and she is also super freindly.
