Permission to shoot neighbor's dogs

My sister lives next door to my mom in the country, (about 400 yards apart or so). My sister has a blond lab that has already bit my other sister on the butt, and every time we go to visit my mom the dog runs up to my mom's and growls at my husband like he is going to bite. My husband and I raised 4 dogs for 14 years and we are animal people. We know how to handle dogs... and her dog just won't let up. I have asked her to keep her dog home when we are going to be there, but she either doesn't listen or doesn't care. After biting my other sister, I would definitely not allow it out when people visit if it were my dog.... (Our dogs would never be that way to people and I don't know why this one is...) I have never wanted to hurt a dog, I love dogs, but when you have one that acts like that and when the owner doesn't seem to give a hoot, it changes your attitude, especially when it's family!

Where I was raised if there was any animal that threatened my animals or family, it got shot. If someone doesn't love their dogs enough to leash them they should be prepared if their dog doesn't come back one night. I don't mean to sound harsh but I would get a shot-gun and just do what you have to do to stay safe especially if animal control said you could. Good luck and stay safe

We had this EXACT same problem as you - we just moved into a home (with acreage) that had been left to sit empty for a few years. All the neighbors allowed their dogs to come over and run the property.

Well - after having a few chickens killed by the dogs I finally had to just get in the neighbors face about it - tell them that by LAW - I could kill their dogs. I told them I didn't want to do that, but if they killed our chickens again, it was going to happen....then I called dog control and they sent a policeman (sheriff) over to speak to the neighbors. It took me and the sheriff to finally convince them to fence in where their dogs were getting out.

My best advice for you is to get that dialogue going with the dog owners.....be nice but firm. Ask the local law enforcement if they can help out. The dog owners need to take responsibility for keeping their dogs fenced in.

Good luck. I hiope it all works out for you!!!

I think the right thing to do is talk to the neighbor first, let him know his dogs have been coming on your property and their not welcome. He can't say its not his dogs you have proof. Give him a chance to fix the problem.

Someone wrote on another thread that loose dogs are just roadkill waiting to happen. I agree.

It seems useless to take pictures and show the dog owner,or vent with anyone knowing the dogs have been a problem for others as well-for MONTHS.

Whether it is you or a neighbor(or even a car passing by) someone will take care of those dogs. Thing is if you complain to the neighbor who really doesn't give a hoot then YOU will be the first to enter his/her mind when they find their beloved pet dead. Say hello to a neighbor from hell.

You think things through, cover your bases and then take care of the problem. Why put up with it?So what if they get more dogs.Just like people saying why kill coons, because there will always be more. So,kill those too if need be.Pets should not roaming, and if they often are then they are free game. I would not wait for them to cause damage or kill before doing something about them.Best wishes whatever you decide.

If you shoot shoot to kill.Anything else just causes more problems.

X2  I've lost several of my chickens due to stupid & irresponsible dog owners refusing to keep their animals on their own property.  Another member on here, "speckledhen" has the perfect statement for her signature line.  "A dog on it's own property is a pet; a dog on someone else's property is a PREDATOR".  That pretty much sums it all up perfectly.

I will be getting my 4 baby chicks the 1st of may and that is my number one concern, dogs and raccoons. I was thinking about getting a pellet gun and I might use a baby moniter

I've been counted a few stray dogs on our property instead of reaching for the shotgun I grabbed a little Red Ryder BB gun pop a couple bb's in his backside and haven't seen the dog sense sometimes a non lethal approach gets the job done sometimes it doesn't
