Permission to shoot neighbor's dogs

Ummmm, I see 'white coated dogs' I think "paintball gun". Might be worth a try. Won't kill the dogs but they'll be pretty painted up (& *maybe* PRETTY painted up--giggle). Plus it can be painful! Ask my son!!

That's the first thing I would try. Be sure you get oil-based ammo, not water based. Oil based won't wash out very quickly. LOLOL!!

Tell the neighbors next time it'll be *real* bullets. And walk away.

Except in most states this course of action would be considered animal cruelty. Shooting the dogs with a paintball gun may be seen as inflicting pain on the dogs for fun.
OP- if you're going to shoot, shoot to kill. Have animal control pick up the bodies and the neighbor pay to have them disposed of. AC has already told you the law is on your side. If the neighbor really is as nasty as he sounds, talking to him isn't going to do a thing besides tip him off that you may have offed his dogs. If you must give a warning, have it come from an animal control officer or sheriffs deputy. Good luck.

Post #4 is very disturbing. Seems roaming dogs are allowed in PA and you are not allowed to do a thing about them. Your best bet is to fence your yard, even if you just do it with hot wire. If they hit that once or twice, they won't be back. Glad I dont live there.

Had a pack roaming around here once that didn't run from gunshots in the air.
They were a lady's that lived down the road that didn't care.
So one day I had a can of bear pepper spray handy and befriended all three of them one at a time.
Sat down called one over, he came over and gave it a shot right in the nose and eyes.
It took off with out making a noise.
The other two looked puzzled but didn't run.
Then the second one came forward and I did the same thing.
The dog did the same thing.
Then the last one had to see what was going on as well and I peppered sprayed it to.
All three dogs never came by ever again.

I have electric wire around all of my pens. I have heard critters touch the wire and they don't come back to check it out again. Electric won't guard against birds of prey. For the electric to work the critter has to be on the ground when it touches the wire to make a circuit.

I would warn the owner if you saw the dogs on your property again they would be dead dogs.

A BYC member a couple of years ago or so had a problem with a neighborhood dog and used I believe a yellow paintball in a paintball gun. The neighbor didn't believe his dog had been on their property until it came home painted yellow. The dog owner was warned.

I just skimmed through, I didn't read through every post so I don't know if this has been addressed. I think it is great you called Animal Control but I would also contact your local law enforement. They will be able to tell you, for sure, what the law is in you city, county and state.

I had a neighbor's dogs that came and killed a few of my chickens a few months ago. He was talked to, said he'd chain them. He did, for 4 months. Almost a month ago, they were back. This time they killed a hen and a roo. Per other neighbors, this man has had problem dogs that kill livestock for years. I thought it over and decided to call the sheriff's office. A deputy came out for my report. We were told that even though our county doesn't have a leash law, Alabama does and that trumps the county.

He also told me I could have a warrant sworn on the owner for having his dog's at large. I didn't go that far but hoped an "official warning" would make him decide to keep his dogs contained. The deputy was going to make contact with the owner. I asked detailed questions about what my rights were and if the dog had to be doing anything etc for me to shoot it.

A few days later, the neighbor came by. He was upset but I explained that I didn't feel I had a choice as it only took 4 months for them to come back. I told him if they were on our property by the time I got out there, I would have shot them. He let me know that the deputy went out once, nobody home and went out a second time and ended up shooting one of the dogs in the head, didn't kill it but shot it. He said I shouldn't have to worry about that one as it sounds like it's permanently disabled and he's getting rid of or shooting the other himself.

I definitely feel for you there. I have had, as many have, dogs roaming the property . My neighbor a few hundred feet up the road, denied that his dog was killing my birds. I took pictures of the dog during the act, made the call to the dog catcher and they scooped him up with a $250.00 fine and another $50.00 for an overnite stay at the dog pound. Neighbor was furious with me. We do have laws here that protect us from stray dogs on property and a gun is allowed here as well.

Needless to say it has been 8 years and the neighbor still won't talk to me. The sorry excuse he gives me "Your birds should not be out of cages. I have been a free ranger all my life as a chicken keeper and will not bow down to stupidity... I have shot dogs before from mauling my birds, hate to do it but !! Even had my day in court with the neighbor after shooting his dog with a pellet gun, a powerful one. The judge told him to leave the courtroom and stop wasting peoples time. I have my rights and he will lose his dog if it happens again.

Power to the people protecting their flocks !!! Steve
