I think that is generally true, anecdotally at least. And it should be noted that those figures I posted are for reasoning tests rather than pure knowledge tests, so perhaps people take different approaches to estimating their own level of competence in a domain of knowledge versus in reasoning ability. I really gotta look at the original paper again cuz it's always possible that I'm promulgating misinformation without realizing it lol
And that is exactly why people shouldn't take info at face value. People make mistakes.

The authors of the paper explain the effect well here:

People tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities in many social and intellectual domains. The authors suggest that this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are unskilled in these domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it.

And if you think about it, it really isn't that irrational for one to judge their performance as being relatively close to the mean if they don't have much else to go off of when rendering an estimate. But I think there's also some bias visible with how people tended to make estimates at least slightly above the mean.

Maybe it's just me, but I've always, like, been annoyed when people, like, use "like," like, a lot when they're talking. Like, it's like, so annoying. Like, just say it.

I think its amusing when a much younger person calls me or my husband "hun". Its usually a female, most younger males that I've encountered say, "mam" or "sir" or nothing. I just laugh and shrug it off. I don't get too offended. There are creeps that give off the creep vibe and when they call me anything other than my name or mam, then for some reason its irritating. But, if they actually said my name, I'd really be worried.
One of my good guy friends calls me heifer. He calls everyone heifer as not to offend anyone.

My mechanic calls me Beautiful! Loud and clear! Whether my husband is present or not! So I call him Darlin', lol. He's about 20 years younger than me. I don't find it offensive at all!

Dunning-Kruger?
I've actually thought about that recently, and the popular "Dunning-Kruger" illustrations don't actually represent the data published by Dunning and Kruger. I think the biggest takeaway from the actual figures that I've seen is that the least able individuals seem to primarily just estimate their performance as being much closer to the mean than it really is (admittedly slightly above the mean, but not by much), rather than estimating it as being particularly high. I actually have some figures saved:

I guess Figure 2 is closer to what's depicted in those popular "mount stupid" illustrations, but it's still nowhere near as extreme. It's ironic that people so commonly share misinformation about the Dunning-Kruger effect, lol. And I definitely don't blame you for it, since I had the same misconception and only recently realized that it's false.

Anyway, I went off on somewhat of a tangent. There are certainly still arrogant assholes who think they're experts when they really know nothing, but thankfully they seem to be less common than those popular illustrations would suggest.
