That's interesting, Steph. I don't think I have ever heard someone use "pet" in past tense form.

Exactly, you would think petting a animal would be the EASIEST thing to do.

then i sound all nitpicky when i tell them to not pet them like that, its just so hard to watch.

Exactly, right? Almost worst is when my dog comes up to them and asks to be petted, smiling and wagging and panting politely, and they totally act like they don't see her. My dogs do not jump up and annoy people, they have lovely manners, and will even sit and wait to be noticed. But their good behavior doesn't get noticed.

when someone pets a animal (like a mouse, or chicken) like a dog. Like, come on? your smashing them to the ground with your hand ruffling them up! weirdo..

Gotta pet with gentle care, love & respect.
Can't stand when someone tries to "rough house" & then they wonder why they got pecked, scratched, bit or pooped on...Duh!

Phoo, don't pity the poor doggies, they get tons of attention! We don't have many visitors, but they are more than a little spoiled from The Man and myself!
