Pets(hopefully) & free range

Welcome to BYC! I'm sorry for your loss. Was it to a predator? If so, I'd reconsider free ranging. Actually, I'm not sure silkies are suited to free ranging, that's why, as much as I'd like to, I don't have any.
Yes it was a hawk. Our Silkie does so good with our crew. Midnight (whom I'm not so sure it's a silver laced wyandotte any more) protects Kilo (Silkie).

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Is the coop finished yet? They look pretty cramped in that plastic tote. I'd move them out to the coop as soon as possible.
It's a cardboard box that they only sleep in at night. Their pen outside is 4x5 but they are only in it while we are at work then they have half an acre to roam while we watch over them.

Silkies are really not suited for free ranging. Their big crests tend to reduce their vision. They are not good flyers. If you have a dog/s that would stay with them - they would be protected.
*I/we* stay with them while they are free.
We are making them a bigger enclosure (20x35 for now) to roam (yes it will be wired on top) while we are at work.
A house will be built as well but we are going to always bring them inside Our home to sleep at night, hopefully. They are not making it easy to get them inside and it's frustrating. We wanted pets/tick & ant control.
