Pheonix and cochin genetics question

Sonoran, I think you're contradicting yourself a bit, because the link to the Onag forum you posted says that you can get Ohiki type bird from the phoenix X cochin cross, and the longtail goddess herself ( here in the US at least) ,Toni-Marie Austin, told me the same thing, now of course you wouldn't get them as F1s since the Ohiki type calls for clean leggs and longtails, and since the F1s would and maybe F2s and so on would have some degree of leg feathering, they would have to be breed back to the phoenix a few times to get the clean leggs, or if they are too skinny like the parent Phoenix, they may have to be bred back to the cochins to make sure you get the plump/roundness from the cochins. Now I believe the original Japanese Ohiki were bred using Onagadorin instead of phoenix, however there are no true Onags here in the Us, and I belive I also read somewhere that that the Chabo/Japs were used, but using the Cochins would eliminate the problem of the leathal shortleg gene from the Japs, So the closest you could get to an Ohiki type bird with what we have here in the Us would be to use Phoenix and Cochins. Now to the OP and anyone else interested, the phoenix you use would have to be great quality bantam phoenix from a breeder, you are not likely to get the longtails if you use hatchery "phoenix".

I also plan on breeding for Ohiki type birds when I along with Aubrey ( Boggy Bottom Bantams) get new phoenix varieties from Toni-Marie in the spring.

And kychickmom, I'd love to see some pics of your project birds.

Yes, the ohiki is a Japanese breed in it's self, but the OP's question was what the cross of a phoenix x cochin would produce, well it produces ohiki's, American version at least. Toni Marie is the only one I know of with imported birds, but she'll tell you the same I'm sure. The cross , when worked with a bit, will give you an ohiki bird.

You can get a Ohiki type bird with the Phoenix and the Cochin but it will take a lot of work to get the Ohiki type that you are looking for. Using the Phoenix you will need a very good tailed bird for that one that is more like a Onagadori with the tail if you are trying to get a Ohiki type out of it. The Ohiki has a lot of Onagadori blood in it. The Ohiki is the closes breed to the Onagadori. What ever cochin that you use needs to be of show stock only or you will not get the type you need. And Japs. was not used in the making of the Ohiki becouse of the legs only cochin was used for the legs. And no thay are no Onagadori in the US but they are some Phoenix in the US that has alot of the blood in them. But when trying to make the Ohiki do not go for COLOR or the feathering off of the legs only go for the shape and the tail 1st. and then get the feathering off of the legs.
