PHOTOS OF IMPACTED CROP and NEED HELP

I don't think crop stasis is preventable - it's just sort of a genetic thing; some birds are prone, some are not. I don't mean to say there aren't precautions to take for other issues, such as crop impaction - but, stasis, I believe, is not preventable.

I'm curious as to how many have an on demand supply of grit for their birds? I was just answering another post and thought I might ask. Personally I do use the oyster shell stuff but it is very powdery and because of this I mix it w/ the coarse kind and even the small and medium sizes so the birds can choose if that's what they do.
So I'm asking how many have a constantly supplied dish of grit just like their feed?

I don't mean to put anyone off, but if I can learn how to prevent the things I read about here on this site I rather appear dumb and ask. I think this site is a good place to learn what "to do", and what "not to do". Thanks folks.

I don't think you're putting anyone off, rancher...we're all here to learn from each other. No one knows all the answers - in my opinion, everyone has information to share! Folks should all be open to listening to differing opinions, as well. I don't think you appear dumb by asking questions, anyway!!

For the last 2 days, I gave her olive oil w/ electrolytes in a dropper & crop massages.
She doesn't appear to be losing weight. She is jerking her neck around occasionally.

I just gave her some Merlot and put ACV water inside her coop.
Before it gets too dark, I'll dose her with Merlot, oil, and electrolytes.

IT'S SNOWING LIKE CRAZY! There's about a 1/2" on the ground in just an hour.
Her coop is tarped for added draft protection.
Her run is totally covered from top to bottom
with a clear tarp, so their shouldn't be any snow in there.
I did remove 99% of the straw from her run, just in case.
It was much cozier for them with the hay. Hmm...I need another bedding solution.
Maybe bark mulch chips or pine straw.

We will see in the morning.

This morning I gave her more wine and massages
The crop seems to have gone down a little bit!
I can't really tell if she's lost much weight.
I can feel her breast bone, but I can feel it on the big hens too.
May need to buy a scale.

Put her in a crate and don't give her food for a day or 2. (water is okay).
Massage her crop aggressively many times a day. You should be able to feel your fingers grinding things up in there. Move your fingers around to different areas of the impaction and massage, massage, massage.....grinding the stuff down.
If you can't give her oil with a syringe down her throat, then give her a couple very small pieces of bread that are super saturated with olive oil.
Massage, massage, massage.

How's our girl this morning? Sounds like you've been able to get some good massages in. I'm hoping she's doing better by now! The olive oil really does help get things moving, and remember when massaging to massage from the BOTTOM UPWARDS, not the other way around. Hope to hear good news!!!
