Pick No More Lotion by ROoster Booster

I am wondering how many of you use this and where is the best place to purchase it. It doesn't look like TSC supplies anything close to this and Blue Kote has not worked and either does pine tar. Give me your opinion.

I used it. They ate it off my rooster's wattles and comb.

And the coal tar in it stains your fingers, so be careful! Some feedstores carry it, some western stores carry it, etc.

I agree with speckledhen, it was a treat for my hens. Seems Blu Kote worked better, but not by much. I ended up caging my roo for about a week and a half and that worked best of all.

It's funny how these things work out. It worked great for me when my rooster was bleeding. On the other hand, my chickens love to eat Blu Kote. Chickens, man. You ca never figure them out

I bought some of this stuff today for one of my poor roosters that has had his tailfeathers picked and the other birds acted like it was a snack. I WILL NOT use this stuff anymore. My two cents.

Well, I vote works great.

Funny how everyone has had polar opposite experiences! I use it on the occasion that I have a Polish with a plucked crest. The other chickens usually investigate it, but won't pluck further. It does stain feathers a purple color, but I don't mind that because by the time the feathers have grown back, the color has faded. I usually re-apply frequently to the picked spot 'till the feathers are starting to grow back well.

ETA: I either order it from Jeffer's livestock supply (good price, free shipping on orders over $50 or a $5 handling fee for orders under $50) or buy it from a vendor at poultry shows.

I am having the same problem. One of my 3 hens has a large wound (right wing torn out) and I have tried blu kote. That didn't stop the other 2 from pecking the wound. Then I bought Rooster Booster No Peck ointment and they are still pecking at her. I think they actually like it. The wound is 3 weeks old now. It starts to heal and then they start pecking at her again. I have been keeping her in a rabbit cage with her own water and food. I placed it inside the coop so she can still be with the other hens. We leave for a 2 week trip next Wed and I will have to let her out of the cage then. Hoping she will be healed enough by then. Not sure what else to do.

I realize this is a very old thread and you have chosen to post to it rather than start your own, which would have been better if you had.

That said, you need to find a way to cover and protect the wound, not simply disguise it by painting something on it. It's been my experience that stuff like "pick-no-more" have very limited success.

What you need is vet wrap, or even duct tape. The open wound is an open invitation to the others to pick at, being attracted to raw meat as they naturally are. Your other option is to isolate the patient until she's healed. If you're going away, perhaps you can put her in a crate and leave her with a friend to care for while you're gone.

Hi Azygous,

Thanks for seeing my post. I was thinking it would show up under new posts so people could see it. Anyway, we have tried duct tape. It didn't stay on. The wound is actually her exposed bone where the wing was. If I duct tape all the way around her she won't have her wing to use. That is the only way I can think of taping so it doesn't come off. Is Vet tape better?
I thought about taking her over to my friends. She has a large old chicken coop that she could keep her isolated from her chickens. My fear is that when she comes back after 2 weeks they will still peck her because she will be new to them. I know I sound like a worried neurotic mom. She is my favorite and used to be the dominant hen. I want to do everything I can to save her. She is doing great. Acting like her old self, eating, drinking, scratching. But she doesn't shoo them away when they peck at her now. It has been 3 weeks now.

In my experience, vet wrap works very well. Get a color the chickens won't want to investigate - I did a dark purple. Black would probably work well.
