PICS!! Marans, Wyandottes, Light Sussex, Ameraucana, Welsummer Blog!!

My DH split part of our exisiting run into two sections so that we can take our 2 - 3 month olds out of the bitty cahe and give them more space. I just bought 4 day old chicks - - - they are still under the heat lamp.

They will go in the 5 x 3 bitty cage in a week or so. They will stay there for a couple of months. In the meantime, Dh and I hope to build a new cage and run area where we can keep our breeders and broodies.

My EE's haven't started laying, yet. As soon as they do, I am hoping to hatch some eggs from them and then get rid of my EE roo. I have two BCM roos who should be big enough by then to choose the best breeding stock.

I thought you might enjoy knowing that I to understand the "need more space" issue. Also, understand that too many roo issue.

Are you breeding one of the BCM's with the EE to try for some olive eggers? I would love to have one of those, too. Then if my BR lays those pinkish eggs, I'd have all the colors!

I'm now getting ready to try and get rid of the rest of the roo's. I will then pick out the 10-12 hens I'm keeping.

Sooo. Are these Ameracaunas Roos or Hens?

1 blue wheaten hen
2 wheaten roo
3 blue wheaten roo
4 is one of those really white blue wheaten hens... no beard on her??
5 wheaten roo

I have a really light hen like your #4... and a roo too.... neither of them have beards. BUT the hen lays one of the richest blue eggs
so I have kept her... Id kinda like to put them together for a test breeding... I have used the same blood lines for 2-3 years now and this just showed up last year.

I cant believe thay are picking each other like that!

Hi there Derek! You might try putting your pics in the "what gender/ breed is this" section to get more feedback. I ended up getting a pair of EE's and one is definately a roo, but he has the more pronounced pea comb. How old are these now? They certainly are pretty. The verdict is still out on my other one. I think I'm actually taking both of them to a chicken swap in Winter Haven tomorrow to get a verdict on the mystery one. How did you get rid of your other roo's? I posted on here and on CL and have had 0 responses so far. I'm also hoping maybe someone at the chicken swap might take the roo, or both if the other is judged to be a roo.

Kat,

Thanks for the reply. I'll try and get some better pics of all your chicks that I hatched. I don't think that the light one has a beard. I will get rid of the roos asap. Thanks for the help. I just started putting Blue Kote on them to see if this helps with the picking.

chics in the sun,

I put them in Craigs list and they were gone fast.

I have I think three Marans roo's to get rid of as well. That will get me down 6 more birds. Please remind me, did you want any extra Marans hens or Ameracauna hens that I have?

Derrick

I got my FBCM from the same lady I got the EE's from, as she was almost exactly the same size as the three I already have, and she is integrating well. If Opal turns out to be a roo, too, I may be interested in an Ameracuana. Then I will have blue AND green eggs!!

Derrick,

I had 2 roos that I needed to get rid of - - - -I tried craigslist and BYC forum and NOTHING.

Today, I went to our monthly chicken swap and took my 2 roos to it. I sold one and gave the other away to a very very good home.

So, what I am saying is if you still have roos to get rid of - - - - find when you local chicken swap is and go to it. Take some extra boxes just incase you have an impulse buyer who did not bring a cage.

I found mine local swap on BYC and it was also posted on our local craigslist.

Good Luck

Yeah, that's how I ended up getting rid of my two EE roo's, too. They went in the first 10 minutes I was there. There is a thread on here with all of the swaps listed - there is one this Saturday in Dunellon.

I got rid of 10 birds this week end. 4 hens and 6 roos. Now I'm down to 18-19 birds. I'm on my way to 11 or so birds in the end. I think I have 2-3 more roos in there and if so I will have 5-6 hens to give away......
