PICS!! Marans, Wyandottes, Light Sussex, Ameraucana, Welsummer Blog!!

Math Ace,

I will be sure to post a picture of the eggs when they come. I may have trouble knowing if they came from the Welsummer or BC Marans though. I see you have some Welsummers as well. The ones I got came from really dark eggs. We will see. Where did your Welsummers come from?

You shouldn't have any trouble telling the welsummers from the marans. They both lay dark eggs - - - but the marans usually have a gloss finish to their eggs and the welsummers have a matte finish to their eggs. Every so often I have a marans whose egg did not get enough time in the oven and it comes out with a matte finish - - - - BUT NORMALLY, they are clearly glossy.

My welsummers came from a local supplier. He gets his from many different sources but his prices are goos and his chicks have always been very healthy. He doesn't do show quality - - - but they tend to be decent quality. I like buying from him because he enjoys the raising part of chickens, so he gets them as day olds and sells them around 2 - 3 months old.

Math Ace,

I here what you are saying but I got my eggs from Whitmore Farms and they were very dark and the same gloss as the Marans from them. They state that they have a hard time telling their Marans from their Welsummer eggs at times. I hear that Whitmore has some of the nicest Welsummers out there so that may be the reason. I will have first hand experience very soon I hope.....

I need to make some next boxes. I don't have any yet.

Fay,

Thanks. She is a nice splash hen... I had a really nice black BLR roo from another source that I had to get rid of. I bet they would have made great Blue BLR chicks....

Joseph really loves his chickens....

We got our first pullet egg.

:weee The egg came on the Saturday the 4th of Sept. It must have come from my first hatch making the pullet a week or so over 5 months old. It must be from the Welsummer and it has great color. No eggs since then. I was wondering if anybody knows when the eggs will really kick in??? Here are some pics of the egg.

The color is washed out by the flash but is in between the last two pics. I can't believe how good the color is on this egg. I hope they all turn out this nice. The egg is small though and I understand that they get bigger as the pullet matures....
