Pictures around the ranch

WOW!!! Awesome animals!

Do you ever experiment around with "exotic" milk from water buffaloes or elands? There was an attempt some years back to "domesticate" elands. It didn't work very well, but they are neat looking animals.

Is this a zoo(like place) that you run? Is it in SD or WI?

Lots more-- just not enough time to upload photos. I should be updating my website! but I'm addicted to BYC.

We are just a farm, we do supply some zoos with animals. We have animals in both WI and SD.

No- I grew up milking cows, so I put my time in already! I can't imagine trying to milk an eland, I don't think they would give much milk anyway.

Whoa, what happened? They seem like they would be a great draft animal!

Eland are good sized, but I don't think they would be useable draft animals.

I don' think it did go over well. Some Europeans and Americans in Africa were certain that domesticating African mammals like hippos, giraffes and elands would be Africa's ticket out of poverty and malnutrition. The rationale was that these animals were disease resistant and better adapted to Africa's unique flora. Elands would be a kind of horse/goat type animal (draft, riding, meat, milk, hides) and hippos would function kind of like semi-aquatic pigs. The latter experiments with hippos did not work, too agressive and apparently they had some problems with elands but I'm not sure exactly what. I'm sure small numbers could be kept but I think that large numbers may be hard to manage, they need more room than goats.

I saw a hunting show where they went to (somewhere in southern Africa) to hunt some elands and they are quite large, larger than most elk here

Gorgeous pigeons!!

wow looks like a vulture mated with a pigeon!

and michickenwrangler, that's interesting. I would love to ride a giraffe. lol

Do you have any of the Blue Crowned Pigeons? I love those things, the size of a turkey they say.... I've always wanted one............. but I'm sure I couldn't afford one.... but so pretty.
