. These are my new babies that just arrived in the mail today! I have spent hours just watching them already, can't get enough!

So cute!!! Mine should be arrive next week!

When do you plan on letting them stay in the coop full time? I think you and I have similar weather (I'm in MA). Just not sure when I should start thinking about moving mine. I have 1 week old chicks and was thining about letting them out this weekend for some fresh air.

I just moved mine out to the coop last night. However I ran a cord out there and put a heat lamp in so they had somewhere warm to go if it got too cool overnight. The only one I was concerned about was the youngest but she cuddled up with the older ones and did just fine. Your little guys would probubly be fine to go outside for acouple hours as long as the weather is warm and dry. As far as moving them outside permanently, I generally base that on how much feathering they have and how warm it stays at night. If your weather is similar to mine then they could probabley go out in acouple weeks.

Eggs in incubator pipping. YAY! Right now 5 of 22. The hatch date is tomorrow, so hope more are hatched then. They are my black australorp chicks. I also have two "mutt" hens and have eggs from them in there too. looking forward to seeing what they look like. Pics as soon as I can open the incubator. Other chicks are fine. I plan to move them to the chicken tractor this weekend.

Chicks out to play again. 2 Rhode Island Reds and 2 Golden Buffs. They are about 4 weeks old. They came from Meyer Hatchery.

Adorable! How old are your chicks? Mine are going to be 3 weeks old tomorrow and they look a lot like yours.
Are your chicks pets? Mine are pets/egg layers. I'll post some pics soon.

LightChick, they are a little more than 4 weeks. As far as pets, i think of them as hobby farm animals. The pullets are going to be egg layers and probably pets. The cockerels, will go to pay for the chicks I bought. I have 8 little black Australorp chicks that will go in the brooder soon. I will post pics of them in a couple days. Most of them, pullets and cockerels, will go to the sale. I may keep one or two. Some of the hens they came from were ugly mutt hens I don't like. They will be sold this Fall, The ones that look like them will go. They look like buzzards. Their bodies are black and sort of fuzzy with some white feathers in their neck. Yuck. The Rooster is an Australorp and so are two of my 4 hens.

Oh the glorious outdoors!

After the winter that would not end, this sure felt like the week that would not end. Cold, wet, rainy and no playtime outside for anyone! We were all going a little stir crazy!

So this afternoon the girls (the human and chick girls) and I headed out to the run.

Oh were they happy - wings going crazy! It was the first time they had relaly been able to test their wings in open spaces and the brooder is getting a little cramped (time for and upgrade!) It was so hard to get a picture of one of them going at it, wings flapping but I finally succeeded! That blurr would be wings:



We also have a rather unusual roo:



That would be a fuzzy roo - our Giant Schnauzer. He has been so good with the chicks. Our run is a 10 x 10 dog kennel and we have not surrounded it with finer fencing yet. He stands on the outside and herds them back in when they escape. He will ask to see them several times a day and seems to know when their cheeps are b/c something is wrong (like they've buried their waterer again) and comes to get us.

Finally we used zip ties to attach pallets to the fence to prevent escape. They were doing so well until one found a treasure (a grub). The Barred rocks try to run and hide to eat their treasure in private - but the others all follow and in an instant all six were outside the run at once!

Once everyone was safely back in the run, my daughter and I sat with our chicken books and Kefir smoothies and enjoyed the sun with the girls. It felt so good to be in the sun! When we came in we had really worn out chicks. They passed out for longer than they have ever slept - I kept checking to make sure they were still alive!

Fortunately we are supposed to have many warm days this week so much more outside play time to come. We homeschool and have already decided to take the school books into the run so we can be entertained during school.
