piercings and tattoos for them or against them?

I really don't care if anyone doing a job has piercings or tattoos, what colour or style their hair is, or what they wear as long as they're decently covered. to my mind, if a person is a good teacher, the superficial stuff isn't going to alter that. A good bank manager doesn't suddently become bad at their job if they put leather trousers on instead of their suit!

unfortunately, not everyone sees it that way. A lot of people (sadly, a majority) are still hung up on superficial stuff.

my hair is currently it's natural boring brown, I have one piercing in each earlobe, and no tattoos. my personality won't change when I dye my hair or get a tattoo in memory of my lost babies, will it?

My first tattoo was my 18th b-day gift to myself. I even had parental approval of the design (they did't like that I was getting a tat, but if I had to get one they were glad with what I got) which is a little star that I used to doodle on everything all thru highschool. Its on the top of my left foot at the base of my big toe.

My other tat was a huge mistake that I got to impress a boy who things didnt work out with (even tho we have been great friends for 10 years, the dating wasnt meant to be) so I am getting it covered up with a family crest combining the crest of my adoptive father and the crest of my bio father, along with some scottish thistles for my scottish heritage. My family crests and scottish ancestry will be part of me forever, and its so tastefully done that I know I am going to be happy with it forever. Theres already a tat there, I'd rather it be something I can be proud of thatn my relationship mistake in display for all....

mom'sfolly - exactly! Here in Austin having tattoos and piercings is almost the norm. I have many tattoos but have left my piercings go. I started piercing myself and friends over 20 years ago, then worked as a piercer when in my twenties. The novelty, for me, wore off. I still love tattoos and have many. I have friends who are tattoo artists (obviously tattooed) as well as friends who work in the medical industry (physician and several nurses), teachers, realtors, upper managment, small buisness owners etc...all tattooed. Would you know? some yes, some no....

and to the person who stated that its the pierced/hair colored kids that are the bad seeds. I say pooh on you. I was one of those, and while not a genius, I was in all upper level courses as were all my friends - every one of us very colorful and very liked by teachers and administrators!

Oh hair color I was every color imaginable untill DH said knock it off. When I was younger I'd usually do a different color every 6 months or so. Now I'm blond have been for about 4 or 5 years now

Pretty much. But my hair is super long, very curly and is blue/red black. Stripping out is nearly impossible, and dying would be way too much work. Oh well, so I have dark hair and like it. I could use some of the Special Effects type dyes to color the grays/silvers, but again, too long so it'd be a pain.

I've got two piercing in each ear. DH bought me little diamond earrings one Christmas and I feel guilty if I wear other earring besides these, so I got the second set. I would like a tatoo on my left hip. I'm a polynesian dancer and that is the side my pareo opens. DH wants a tatoo also, but doesn't want me to get one. So we've been at a standstill for several years. If he gets one, that automatically means I can get one and vice versa.

I got my tattoo four years ago... when I was 53. I had just gone through a health scare... they thought I had lymphoma but after a few months of testing it turned out to be sarcoidosis... a chronic but not usually life threatening disease. I wanted to do something really bold and different (considering I am pretty conservative and religious) I designed a tatt that is a triquetra---celtic symbol for the Holy Trinity and above and below it it says "Gloria Patri et Filii et Spiritui Sancto". That is Latin for "Glory to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit" (I'm Catholic) and it has lilies twined around the triquetra because my name is Susan (Shoshanna) which is Hebrew for "lily". It is my way of giving perpetual thanks to God for my non-cancer diagnosis.

I had to add my opinion here. For one, I do have to agree with the post here about it being a potential problem. I have no experience in the dental area or anything but I've had a tongue ring for 10 years. I always thought that people were stupid for thinking that it ruined your teeth but I actually chipped my tooth one day about a month ago by biting down on that stupid tongue ring. I finally tossed it out and realized that it left grooves in my teeth where I had subconsciously been chewing on it.

That's not to say that I judge others by what they want to do - its your body and if you like it then it's fine by me! I personally love tattoos - I may be one of the weirdos that thinks it's kind of neat when people get full body tattoos.. but would never do it myself. I have a few tats and I've had the tongue piercing and my ears. I'd like to get a few more tattoos but I'm over the piercings after chipping my tooth, lol.
