I have my tongue pierced and I like the fact that nobody really knows it's there unless I show them. My ears grew back (figured out that I have to wear Titanium jewelry), my navel grew back (never liked that one much, was in the way a lot) and I have another un-visible one that is still with me.
I never really could decide on anything I wanted permanently tattooed, and lets face it, I'm a bit chicken about it too. Piercing is over really quick, tattoos take time.
Tattoos and piercings can be tasteful or overboard or trashy, depending on the style, number, and how the person wears them. I really don't care what other people do though.
Beekissed ~ body piercings (except for ears at the mall) are not done with a gun like you are thinking of. Any REAL piercer uses new, autoclaved sterilized needles and sterilized body jewelry. The sterile package is opened in front of the customer, the same way my dentist opens a package of sterilized tools before he looks at my teeth. If your piercer is not up to those standards, turn around and WALK OUT. Secondary infections that occur are usually from touching the fresh piercing with dirty hands while it's still healing. Having a piercing doesn't automatically make one a risk taker. Driving to work is far more dangerous.
