Pig people, Need help with cheap feeder ideas

Well, we are having trouble finding any pigs, but hopefully we'll find some somewhere. We've started asking around about them. But I hate to go to the trouble of building everything up just to have it go vacant. My husband is a bacon addict, so this pig thing was his idea.

Here are some pics of where my two pigs live, assuming you can find some up there. I had a heck of a time finding mine, but finally got in touch with a local farmer who raises them. He sold me two Yorkshire barrows for $20 each.

Anyway, here's their shelter, which faces away from the prevailing southerly winds:

The shelter was pretty inexpensive. I used six 4x4s set in concrete for support, treated 2x8s as girts around the bottom, then 2x6s for the remaining two levels of girts. The siding is rough-cut poplar 1-by, purchased directly from the sawmill for $60. The roof is plain old 5V tin.

Their entire living area is about 90x150, and is fenced with 39-inch field fence. Additionally, to keep them from digging under the fence, there's a single strand of electrified wire about 6 inches off the ground, just inside the perimeter. It works wonders for keeping them away from the fence.

Right now, they're eating from a big rubber bowl, but I picked up a 2x10 to build them a trough shortly.

Here are our two boys, from about four weeks ago:

I was going to send some pictures of some ideas to use,but once I seen fredsters post it would be hard to beat. That is the perfect set-up imo.The only exception is that I like the Durocs.
Nice pen Fredster. Will

I have about $18000 in my feeder for my pig so you wont want to go that route.

Follow Justusnak and Fredster, those are great looking set ups for small herds. The half plastic drums work great just be sure the wash them good with water, soap, and baking soda before you use them.

Purdy little things, they will be good eating

They are SO cute!! Nice set up.

I think I might have located some pigs.

I posted a wanted post on Craigslist. I got a responce saying he had a few $40 each. I'm just waiting for more details.

If that doesn't work out try your extention, or state ag department. SC puts on a market bulletin:

http://www.scda.state.sc.us/marketbulletin/marketbulletin.htm

you have to click on the date.

NC has this:

If CO doesn't have an online version, they probably have a hard copy one. These are great places to find livestock at competitive prices. You could also call and ask for a list of pig breeders from your extension, or ag department. They are both really good resources.

Have you gotten your pigs yet???

As far as feeders and waters you can use just about anything that will hold water/feed.
I posted somewhere else on here, not sure where anymore some things we have used....
~old bathtubs
~old sinks
~kiddy swimming pools
~little tykes sand boxes
~barrels cut in half
Things like the bath tub we put in the ground. Caulked the drain and filled up. The pigs LOVE it to wallow in. Cleaning it is pretty easy, as they go in and out most of the water eventually goes away. A good garden hose cleans it nicely.
Kiddy pools can hold lots of water too.
The sand boxes are good sized for the pigs to eat out of, specailly after they get larger.
even the sinks work nice for a water holder. That way they can't fit in there and get the water dirty.
Hope some of these ideas helped.
We have and still use all of those on the farm for different things/animals.

Getting the pigs tomorrow. Is there a problem letting them play in the compost pile? We haven't added anything to it for awhile.

This is EXACTLY what I wanted to do...
We have 3 pigs now. I told hubby I wanted to get 100 more, just to stick along the property line so when the wind blew just so it would blow right into our NASTY neighbors house.

Of course we didn't do it as Jason figured the neighbors would probably poision them......

But maybe some day I will talk him into letting me do it, but not so close to the line that the neighbors can do anything.
