The first egg was laid this morning. but it(the egg) is cold now.
Will they start to incubate when the 2nd one comes? or do they not know what they are doing?

I can see that while you are tending to your chickens, you are also doing math,,,, 24 - 5 = 19

In a perfect world yes and the both eggs should hatch at the same time. I have some birds that incubate the first egg from the get go and others that do not.

Yes they did hatch on the same day. 19 days for the first egg an 17 for the 2nd.

I'm scrambling to get some bands - I procrastinated figuring out the club social membership thing...

There is another nest with 3 eggs! Not sure if it's 2 hens on this nest. There is a cockbird who is wooing 2 hens(or maybe the 2 hens are rivals for his affections, they hate each other), neither has laid yet.
