Pigeon Talk

Somewhere just the other day I read a discussion on here where someone said that the red grit contained iron which gives it the color, but I can't remember where I saw it!

I offer both in a mixed container and when I need to refill it there's usually an equal amount of grey and red left meaning mine don't seem to have a preference.

thanks! It will be many years from now. I'm actually minor.
it sure is! A bit out of my price range now. I would actually make my own trap similar to the one I linked, it wouldn't be too hard.
is she still sitting on the babies? If so, it appears to be a very large, runny broody poop. Add Apple cider vinegar to their water. I do mine everyday, as many times as I change their water. do two tablespoons per gallon of water. I go thru about a gallon every three weeks. It works! ACV
I do add the ACV a couple times a week- I'll switch to every day and see what happens. I figured it was from brooding but I was mostly concerned because it was so runny and foamy. The cock was having some issues as well and their droppings looked really bad yesterday but they're back to normal now.

I try not to obsess about the look of droppings too much. I have treated for coccidiosis about 3x in two and a half years, using Amprolium. The result is usually photo op worthy poops for at least a short time. :lau

Brooding can result in some gross poops!

Speaking of red stone grit and poops -

You can see someone went for the red grit!

Oh yeah. I didn’t know how huge they were until I saw them scattered around the coop, big and stinky

Me and Nugget have gone to short times where I just hold him in my hand to bringing him in to sit on my lap for awhile. He doesn’t seem too concerned.
I’ve noticed something. When Nugget squeaks loudly, it makes kind of a honking noise or something. Is this normal and should I be worried? He acts perfectly normal, he loves to waddle about.

The honking is very normal. It evolves into the better sounding squeaking we all love :)

Oh ok, thanks. I was worried that he might have a respiratory infection or something.

I’ve been wrapping Nugget up in a little cloth to transform him into squab burrito and he just peeks out and looks at me, all warm and cozy.

Nope, its in the Midwest, Iowa I think.

I just bought a huge, 55#, bag of natural Redstone grit and paid a fortune for shipping. Hope it will last a lifetime. I am not at all sure its any better than crushed granite but my birds like it and I'm a sucker. Lol I think @Old_Strain_Lover said he uses the granite?
I guess I need to clarify... I use the gray pigeon grit. While it does contain crushed granite, it also has other ingredients such as calcium chips (sometimes oyster shell depending on the manufacturer), charcoal, and a powdered vitamin/mineral mixture. Crushed granite alone would only help with seed grinding in the gizzard, but one would need to add other ingredients for calcium and other minerals as granite doesn't give them any of this. When I mentioned in the other post that I use the gray grit, I meant the gray pigeon grit. It's the same thing as red pigeon grit, minus the added iron. Otherwise they are both a mixture of crushed granite, calcium chips, usually charcoal, salt and a powdered vitamin/mineral mixture. The redstone you bought is a good grit as a trace mineral supplement (i'm pretty sure they make it out of clay). It's not a grit one would use as a grinding aid though. However it is a good additive during the breeding season as it does supply them with some additional calcium and whatnot.
