Pigeon Talk

Got my new bands in today. Just in time! Another day or two, and these young ones wouldn’t have gotten a band. And I got numbers under 1000. First time ever. Lol

Hi guys!
I just have a quick question, what do you all feed your pigeons?
I only have five and don't want anything too expensive. I've been just feeding bird seed (and they seem to love Purina Flockraiser so eat a lot of that too) but just seeds seems so unhealthy to me, lol.

Purina Flockraiser is complete nutrition in a processed feed. No problem feeding that,,, and it is not,,, unhealthy,, IMHO.
My pigeons would not eat chicken feed,, I suppose,,, if that is all they had,,, hunger would change their mind.:idunno
I fed pigeon feed that I got from local feed store. I also fed them in a separate dish,, wild bird seeds. Pigeons did alright. I just had them for personal loft flying, and short tosses. I did not race.
@Hokum Coco feeds his pigeons chicken pellets. (know from reading his posts)

Lost my favorite pigeon today.

Frodo was the first pigeon I had born in my loft in April 2019. A year later at the start of the pandemic I lost my entire flock during a loft fly and he was the only one I ever got back - found 80 miles away with his tail ripped out by a raptor. I retrieved him and he became the patriarch of my flock, fathering 6 excellent members of my flying team in the past two seasons

Today a Cooper’s hawk flushed out at my birds as they were all congregating to head back inside the loft. It locked onto Frodo and while the others went above the trees he unfortunately flew low and hard through the empty door frame into the neighbors half-built garage across the street and hit the window on the back wall. I wish I could’ve saved him but I believe he probably died on impact before the hawk got to him immediately after. I can only hope that meeting his end this way was instantaneous.

Rest in peace my friend.

RIP. So sorry for your loss.

But for some good news I’m happy to say all my other birds are doing well and my babies from this summer are finally all grown up now.

I also have an oops baby that incubated through the blizzard. I’m prepared to bring the family inside if necessary but they’re doing a great job keeping it covered so far. We’ll see what happens when it gets a little bigger.

Can you experts here tell me what breed of pigeons these are? I saw the pic online but not identified and I am rather taken with them. They look a little like classic frills with the short beak and little crest, but I don't think they come in that color, the beaks seem a bit too long, and there is no chest frill. Can't tell if they have clean legs or not, but certainly not feathered enough to be fairy swifts.

Whatever they are, I love the soft look of their little faces.
