Pigeon Talk

Anyone ever seen these Polish Srebrniaks? I think they're a type of tippler. I like how angular they are. I see some on auction sites all the time and I'm really tempted but I don't know where I'd put them.
Yes I have had them in the past (there are actually a few different types of them). I didn't keep them long because you need to have a good sized flock with high flyers, the hawks were picking them off, and quite honestly I just think they are quite ugly haha. What are you wanting to do with them? Just have them to have them? or fly them? If you want to fly them i would recommend you don't. It's hard to find good flying stock in this country as so many people are just keeping them for exhibition, and you would also need to build up a larger flock of them. Plus it's a whole different animal with feeding and training high flyers. If you just want to keep them to look at because you like them, then sure why not... but they do tend to be a bit on the flighty side.

Well BP mentioned pigeons flying through the night to get back to their coops. Had no idea! These birds continue to amaze me.
It's not that they fly through the night to get to their coop... it's that high flying pigeons often fly for very long periods of time, way up high in the sky (look like tiny specs). Some people let them go too long before getting them down and then they wont be able to land when its dark so they end up flying all night long and don't land until the morning. It's not a good practice because the birds become exhausted.

Ok....my stupid question for the day. Do pigeons fly at night when heading back to their lofts?
not stupid at all! They will, but don't like to,,, like bio said. The best of the best racers will return after dark, it it's rare.

I mentioned them flying thru the night, talking about highflyers. Highflyers are a breed that, well, flys high. they can fly for extremely long times, due to their unusually broad wings, and large tail. They are extremely muscular, putting even a racing homer to shame! The longest they were ever recorded flying is, I believe, 54 hours.

so they weren't flying home, but around home, just for the fun of it! They do have pretty good homing instincts... But not like a homer.

When are you gonna get some pigeons? Let me see,,, I think you told me THIS spring! are you still thinking about it?

So this morning Cyril is NOT on the egg, and neither is Clara. I don't know if I like that. Maybe they're waiting and she's actually going to lay a second egg? But I don't want her sitting on it at night and starting the development and then him letting it go cold in the day. I might replace it with a fake egg until I can see what they're going to do.

I totally understand. But,,, the good news is pigeons can't get corona... :gig
That's actually not fully true. Pigeons, and chickens, and some other birds can and do get coronavirus... it's just a species specific coronavirus. I think they first found it way back in the 80's or something like that. This new covid-19 however... I don't think anybody truly knows just yet. I think it would take testing first to be able to definitively say whether or not they can get it. Much too early yet, and right now the worry and resources are better placed elsewhere.
