Pigeon Talk

Going out to watch them fly now. That's what makes it all worthwhile to me.
bbl :)

I can't have pigeons and not fly them, but the hawks made it impossible to fly them so now I have no pigeons.

One cloudy/rainy day I was in a reclined beach chair in the backyard watching and rating my rollers fly when our daughter stopped by. After saying, "Hi" she went inside and asked the Princess, "Is there anything I need to know about Dad?" Poor girl was positive I had advanced dementia.

About three years ago my hubby had two pigeons that hung out with them on a job site. One of them Sat on his shoulder while he was welding up a beam lol. The picture is of hubbys boss getting acquainted with their new buddy. When the job was done and they loaded up to head home this one pigeon landed on the truck and refused to get off. It was like it wanted to go home with them.
The property owner didn't know anything about them and we've always wondered where they come from and why they were so friendly.

The one pictured was not your typical feral pigeon. My experience with pigeons tell me it definitely had an owner and human contact at one time.
My assumption is it was probably hand fed as a squab. Your husband had a chance to have a devoted pet.
Pigeons have facial recognition and can pick their owner out of 300 people or more.

My guess is like your husband it's owner also had a beard.

Lol! I didn't think it looked feral either, but I don't know much about pigeons. He gave some serious thought to bringing them home. . but he figured they had to belong to someone.

Just finished cleaning and sterilising my loft top to bottom. All the feeders and drinkers have been bleached and fresh feed, water, grit and pickstone. I used virkon s to sanitise. It's a broad spectrum anti viricidal so hopefully if there was anything there it isn't now. This is a real worry for me now. Although I do carry out reasonably good biosecurity this caught me off guard. I did wash up before going into the loft but if that was enough I don't know. Time will tell. 2-10 days if nothing I'm in the clear. This goes to show the importance of good biosecurity, I just hope that I'm lucky. It could also be that the wood pigeon didn't have it and was in its death throws. Idk.
Sending good vibes and high hopes to ya friend! :fl:hugs
Thanks. I've done what I can. The only risk was from my clothes. I think I'm going to have to reassess how and if I can help people with injured pigeons. It's difficult to say no because I want to help but I can't risk my birds. I need to get mine all vaccinated. It's not that expensive in the grand scheme of things.
Anyways onto a lighter note I think that lucky(the one who had the broken leg) is now alpha male! There was a standoff followed by a punch up and lucky was left on the top perch! And I think he has paired up with one of the first hatchlings, Boris! Who I think may actually be female!! View attachment 1560252 I caught them smooching on the top nest area! He was preening her face and strutting his stuff! When they saw me looking in, well the look I got!
Heheheh.... :fl good luck to Boris and Lucky! ;)
Thanks! I'll try that today. With pigeons you just never know for sure.:th

It's part of what makes them so interesting. Monogamy, polygamy, cheating, same sex couplings, good parenting, poor parenting ------------ and the list goes on. Hmm, what other species does that sound like ? :lau
Hmmm... No clue...:lau:gig

I have all of that going on in the loft - not helped by the original gender imbalance of 2 cocks, 6 hens. Doba, Lonan, and Kiki are prime examples. Lonan and Kiki paired up and were raising chicks when he cheated on her with Doba who raised one baby on her own. Then Doba managed to steal Lonan away and they raised 2 together. Meanwhile Kiki retained all rights to the nest box and occupies it instead of a perch. Having lost the big nest box to Kiki, Lonan and Doba occupied a lesser one. Now Lonan has moved back in with Kiki and all the happy baby raising has produced a gang of jerky teenage cockbirds. I don't even know who injured Doba!!:barnie
...I could go on... its basically a soap opera or telenovela in there...:lau
:th :lau

“As the loft turns”

X2 :lau
:D Her name Kitchi just evolved into Kiki. @KikisGirls knows..;)

.... there's also the pair of hens who abandoned one baby at 12 days old, moved to another nest box and successfully raised a baby there... I have enough episodes for a full season!
Oh heavens... :gig
