Pigeon Talk

Finally had some time today to work on the aviary. I just need to put the door on and make the perches while I wait for the hardware cloth to ship.

Looks good :thumbsup Is it attached to the back of your loft?
I bought the wire from Walmart online. Amazon also had decent prices.

I wish that grey building was my loft lol, just a shed. I built it that way so that the shed would block the winds from the north. The plan is to move the current loft behind and attach it to the back end.

It will look good when finished. If you can move the loft to it, it will be perfect and your birds will all be safe. Is there a time when the hawks go or are they there all year round?
I used a 13mm twisted wire for mine. The hardware cloth is really expensive here, double the price. Fortunately and trying not to tempt fate but hawks are fairly scare in my vicinity and racoons are not in UK. Cats are probably the biggest problem I have but they rarely come in my garden.

We have around seven species and only two or three I consider to be a huge threat. There are less species of hawk overall in the area in the winter as many of them like the warmth but the Cooper's, (very similar to the sparrowhawk you guys have) stay all year. I've had less overall hawk incidents in the summer vs the winter but still quite a few.
I live in a pretty wooded area so the hardware cloth should keep out raccoons, cats, hawks, weasels, and whatever else.

The loft is about finished now. I still have a bit of stapling to do on one side, door springs, bobwires trap door and I started with the fronts for the nest boxes. I've opted for wood and dowls rather than mesh. More work but it will look cracking! I got one done only 11 more to do.
