Pigeon Talk

Genetics can confusing it's totally okay! I mean like 10 minutes before hand I totally switched up the results for a combination I've bred before haha! I had a guy once tell me that blue was dominant above all and Ash Red didn't exist at all as a base color, that it was a diluted Recessive Red, it was a little odd! : D

I hope you're luckier than me with breeding, a spread Ash red is a cool bird (not a crazy looker but you for sure don't see them often!) I still remember my first pair I breed them 7 times and only ever got one cock bird... he's a little turd too lol. He knows he's my only spread almond, hopefully now I can breed him after the heat waves over, he's a few years old but he never paired up, but I have a pretty little blue bar pied girl <3 praying for classic almond! Not rare but something I've haven't had yet haha !

During my 4H years for pigeons I focused in on genetics, I love genetics and breeding and while my space is limited to around 20 birds I was able to breed through my friends and learn from the older guys I met at shows, I love pigeon shows <3 everyone's so nice there, compared to chicken shows where a fight could break out cause of the tension! It's crazy the difference! I'd met up with a local Washington guy who had a small (successful) show flock but had 200 birds worth of genetic 'experiments' and studies, he was working with ice, dun, deep rich grease quill black and almonds which are my favorite <3 I can't wait to start breeding again! (And hopefully if all things go right and I can try breeding ice to almond this year or next! :D)

do you mean a bird can be half spread, or that there's a 50-100% chance of getting red ash spread?
here's the color im calling silver: more commonly called red bar, though that isn't even a correct color. View attachment 2268061

I dont know the silver you're talking about... Well, I'm sure I do, but there's ten different names for every pigeon color!

But I won't be using him... I will be using this black male and this hen: View attachment 2268066View attachment 2268067
That cock is not black... that's a t-pattern checker. So he is not a spread.

okay. I am probably wrong. Sorry!!! But I learned it from a local genetic expert. He said that ash red bar isn't a color, as it is referring to birds that have red bars. But when we see a blue bar, we are referring to a blue bird with black bars. And red bar birds ...... I'm now confused why he was saying this. Next time I see him I'll ask.... I am sorry for ALL the cunfusion.

Okay... See above qoute... I learned it from a local genetics expert.

Here is where I was getting cunfused: the normal silver I'm referring to isn't the correct silver. The correct silver is a dilute blue bar, which will still have bars. And the bird I just posted "IS a red bar " I'm so sorry for all the confusion ! Thanks for schooling me! Here is a link that explain it better. Scroll down to the dilute section. https://www.google.com/url?q=http:/...FjANegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw3qteM0_Z4c2iwOQR5OLSKP
Ash red is the color... bar is the pattern. You can also have barless in the ash reds... looks almost the same as spread ash red, but it still has the color on the neck... just no colored bars on the wing shields.

Here is a young dilute spread blue... Commonly called a dun. Pics didn't turn out too great with the sun in the back. IMG_20200730_090044671.jpg IMG_20200730_090040668.jpg

This is Marla my Dun Chinese Owl project bird, although she's getting probably a new home it was always nice to be able to see her stand out from my black owls xD Sorry for the weird photo, I'd taken it a few weeks ago in a dog carrier, wish I had one with her mate but I don't, but he's just a bog standard black! : )

I wish I had a picture of this man in my hands but he's so incredibly huge compared to the rollers I'm used to! Really wide! He's a racing Homer from a guy here in WA, apparently this guy won quite a few races when he was younger but was 'retired' to a breeder, then I got him! I think he's 8 or 9 now and still fertile, constantly trying to make a new nest hidden from me haha! I love how dark he is and then his super light unders, it's like his TChecker makes him look like he's wearing a tuxedo haha : D

I love pigeon shows
me too! I have gone to the 2018, and 19 NYBS in lousville. This year was cancelled though... :( If you are ever going to the lousville show, let me know and we can meet up. The Portuguese Tumbler club and a good attendance at the Louisville shows! The grand national is there This january.

sorry. I must have not made it clear. Yes, I know he isn't a spread, but he carries the spread gene. So if I mated him to a red ash hen, would there be much of a chance of breeding red ash spreads?

I'm pretty sure spread is dominant, so if a bird has it it'll show. But if you breed them you could possibly get an Ash red T checker so that could be cool! : D

I usually don't get away from Washington/Oregon when it comes to shows, I'd like to go to a national show some day though! Once I can afford it ; ) there's a good handful of shows around here though and there's also my county and state fair : D
