Pigeon Talk

The band on the beak is nothing to worry about, I've noticed it on most squab I've had hatch. More noticeable on birds who get darker beaks, less noticeable on birds who keep the pink/flesh colour (like whites, sprinkle almonds, etc) The exact cause and what it means? No idea. I'd assume it's just pigment doing something, I wouldn't worry too much!

I think somebody told me that those markings on the beak can mean the pigeon carries what’s called the dirty or smokey gene which in addition to feather markings can cause them to have dark feet which eventually lighten up.
Interesting. This hasn't been the case with my flock. 90% of my blue\black birds have this band when young, but none of them have the dirty gene. I like to keep my loft clean, no dirty genes allowed.
