Pigeon Talk

Oh, my one female was very dominant and territorial so maybe she’s the one running the others off .. I know she wasn’t the kindest to the very first offspring Fish. Maybe a plausible reasoning there..

Although I don’t see why they aren’t utilizing the rest of the shed more as they go down to the floor for their food and water..

Not to mention the red squirrel that’s decided to move in this past year that’s going to be a pain to deal with for opening the coop during the day
That may be reason some of your pigeons decided to leave. You may have to try and relocate squirrel somehow, or make it difficult, for squirrel to enter. Then they just give up, and find someplace different. I feed the squirrels around my house regularly. BOSS is their favorite food. I see them as my pets as well. I do keep them out of getting into my attic. That was a challenge, closing all possible entry points with hardware clothe.

Oh! I should have mentioned the red squirrel doesn’t go in the coop, it’s near impossible for it to get in lol. I’m talking about with my chickens I’ll have this year, it may go into the coop with the ground opening for the chickens to free range.

It’s actually chased off the grey/brown squirrels we had on the property so I’m wanting it to leave as I don’t want it getting into the house at all like the chipmunks we’re getting in.. there’s no human access to the attic that I know of, but I know we get it fogged for cluster flies every year for the past four years. I’m not sure if that would help keep them from nesting in there

Consider placing additional perches inside shed on wall. I know that some pigeons do like individual perches.

I’ll definitely be doing that!

The perches with the angles boards underneath to catch any poop so it doesn’t drop on others as I want one wall to be individual perches for them to be able to keep away from the chickens as I don’t want to block them from the whole coop once the chickens are in there..

Look at those little pink hairy babies with marbles for eyes :love :love I just love them so much!!!

Do the babies always have that feather colouring like the parents? Or are there different colourings? I thought I saw them all the same in your flock but I could have been mistaken? Unless the breed is specifically those colours only which is kind of cool if so !

Haha thanks!
There are basically 2 varieties (a few more rare ones) - Satinettes and Blondinettes. Satinettes have the white body, with several variations of wing/tail color. Blondinettes have the solid body color and also several variations of wing/tail color. Mine are all Satinettes, having the white body base. I have a couple with solid blue wings, but most are blue laced or brown laced.
The mom in that last pic is young. Her lacing is not very defined yet, but it gets better as they get older.

Thank you for the great learning experience!! I love absorbing new information (especially about birds:celebrate) for actual people with experience! Plus the young mom is beautiful even if she hasn’t come into her patterning as much yet!

I seem to recall a long while back reading the “fancier” breeds have a harder time flying, how do these guys seem to get around? Is more of an enclosed complete aviary needed to help ward of arial predators they may not be able to outmaneuver? Or are they able to free fly quite well without many losses?

I remember the breeds with the large feathers on their feet or the extreme exhibition/show birds struggle with flying.. I just can’t about the Satinettes

They aren’t the most accomplished flyers, but they still fly fairly well. I wouldn’t trust letting them free fly, especially with the hawks in my area. I’ve never let mine free fly, but my feeling is that they would be fairly easily picked off.

I occasionally let mine out into my duck pen, which is much larger, but still net-covered. Somehow the gate got opened and a few got out. I was worried to death, but they all made it back in. I had to peel back a section of netting above their landing and lure them in.

My Arabian Trumpeters are the same way skill-wise.
