I agree! I did toss out the first set of eggs he produced with one of my hens because I didn’t want them to hatch while I was on vacation, but now that I’m back, I’m eager to breed from him.

“Rocket” is settling in nicely. I banded him with my own bands as well, he’s here to stay

That pigeon outgrew the permanent leg band stage,,, but was still from good genetic breeding.
Racer placed the chip, leg-band to determine that pigeons speeds in returning.
Then determine if good breeding stock for further breeding.

My guess is that the guy raising it missed banding it, but it is out of good stock, so he puts the digital timing band on it, exactly as you said. Test it to see if it's worth breeding.

Clearly it's an old bird (in the racing sense that it isn't this year's), and that it has acclimated to a new home suggests that the homing instinct isn't adequate to win races!

Unfortunately I don't know anything about those digital bands. We still used rubber race bands and mechanical clocks back when I last was involved. Lot of clubs were converting to electronic clocks, but we hadn't. I'll bet that the digital band is designed to be removable though?
