Hi fellow pigeon fanciers, I know I haven’t been too active these past months but I just want to share about what’s going on with my pigeons.

To start I have been keeping bad record of the birds as they have just been breeding crazy, and I just can’t remember the date so that’s a problem as well.

I am selling most of my crossbreds now as there are far to many, and I would like to sort out the loft (clean it well, add new perches/nest boxes, better drainage for rainy days). I also need to move in my fantails as they have been living in the quarantine pen for a few months as I didn’t want crossbreeding.

The birds I’m selling aren’t vaccinated. I’m hoping they are healthy and aren’t carrying anything (I’m just not sure as I’ve had a few sick birds sometimes but the squab mortality rate is quite high) as I don’t want other people’s lofts to get affected (although they should quarantine the birds if they are responsible). I am selling around 30 birds for AU$100 as I really need to move them on. If no one comes to get them in the next 2 weeks I will either call or message a person who gets stock in to sell regularly, or put them up for free.

Serbian highflyers: I’ve lost a pair a few months ago and now only one pair is producing young. One of the squeakers is bleeding in the mouth at the moment for some reason.

Birmingham rollers: I think my pair is a bit off at the moment as they sleep on the ground in the night and they also seem more calmer then usual although I have been feeding them out of a bowl that I hold in my hand so that may be why. There young are fine.

Fantails: Pairs could possibly be a little sick. Young are fine.

Crossbreds: Some birds have red beak and cere (I think it’s called) and red skin around eyes. Dropping’s look healthy from most of the flock. Squab mortality isn’t the best.

You sound to be a honest person; many pass their sick birds on to others and spread disease and cause all manner of problems. I've been fighting diseases for two years because a person had no thought other than making money. Many of my birds are pets and it has been hard to watch them sicken and die. No money for veterinarians. Quarantine doesn't always work. At any rate I salute you; be proud of yourself.

That said it reads that your birds are suffering from some illness. Solve this problem before offering them for sale. Any informed bird person reading your post would not buy from you.

I wish you the best for future offerings of sound and healthy birds.

That’s a shame, I’m sorry about what you’re going through. People shouldn’t sell sick animals, especially ones that carry diseases.

I have had experience with this problem before well I still am. My parents wanted to buy me some chickens for Christmas I think it was, we went to this farm and my parents already planned on getting some different breeds. The place had lots of birds some had missing eyes. Apparently the guy who owns them keeps these rare peacocks, and is in this trade with the zoo and stuff.

After we got all the birds which costed a few 100 as they were rare breeds. We went home.

The chickens started dying the day after we bought them, eventually leading to the disease spreading to the other chickens. Now all our chickens carry this virus and die in small numbers every now and then.

That’s why I now keep ducks as they are much more resistant to disease, and they can’t catch what the chickens have.

Anyways I plan with the pigeons to figure out the issue some how and then treat them. I don’t know if I should vaccinate them as I know that not all people vaccinate there birds, and they’re perfectly healthy.

I also wish you luck with your animals.

Disease can be hard to deal with. So many of our birds have sickened and died my wife refuses to have much to do with them. She helps get their food ready and helps with medicating any sick birds. But where she used to have bird pets and spend time with me handling the birds she has stopped not wanting to be disappointed having a treasured pet die.

Thankfully the sicknesses has become a thing of the past. Once again my birds are healthy. I have two batches of healthy chicks now and another hen hatching early next month. Winter babies are harder to care for, but spring will soon be here.

I don't have pigeon now. I've had many in the past and hope to start a new flock soon.
