Pine shavings or hay in run for winter

I use pine shavings on the inside and straw outside. My run has a roof so the wet is kept to a minumum and the dirty straw makes good compost and mulch for the garden.

Are you talking about a link to a YouTube video? That was TERRIBLE!! I was thinking about putting straw or hay around the outside of my run for a windbreak also. Now I'm not so sure.

I have sand in my run, and lately the ladies are taking pine shavings out the chicken coop. The top is covered with a tarp and it stays dry.

IMO if the only reason you are putting down straw or shavings in the run is you feel the ground will be too cold, save your money. It is really not necessary. As far as putting pine or straw in the run, I would not want to contaminate my sand with it, but I don't have a run, so that is pure conjecture on my part.

Lots of wild birds and chickens running around where I live at -30. Have not seen boots or socks on any of them yet... Chicken (birds in general) are REALLY tough!
