I would like to discuss litter, and run maintenance, further with people in the northeast, because of the weather and predator issues. "Free Ranging" is out of the question for me, though I do let them out of the run for "supervised play." The henhouse is 8x10, the attached run is 10x12. Both are in permanent positions. During the winter, I've become resigned to changing the litter once a month because they spend so much of the time in their henhouse and the litter starts to generate ammonia fumes. I've already dug out the soil in the run once (have had chickens for two years now) and replaced it with sand, albeit sand that was too fine. Any input on keeping the litter in the henhouse, and material in the run, clean? Or, rather, as clean as possible? I've got 10 hens right now, looking to add up to four.
