Yes it does sound funny when they first start crowing. They throw that little head back and puff their chest out. Then all that comes out is a little scratchy squeek.

Yes I think Ben is going to give everyone a run for their money. Wait until he see all those hens. Indigo is so precious and Marka looks so dainty. Winter of course is Mr. Handsome and 2nd in command to Ben.

I've been nursing my favorite chicken back to health. Why does it always have to be your favorite? She has sour crop issues. There shouldn't be anything left in her crop now she has emptied it twice. I have her laying on a towel and she has a bowl of electrolites in front of her. She will not drink water with ac vinegar I tried that. She won't eat the yogart so I have been syringe feeding that to her. She is going to hate me after this.

The guineas will be going to the coop in a couple of days. I'm going to miss them. I'm going to clip their wings before they go to the coop. I don't want them flying over the fence when I turn them lose in the yard.

So sorry, it really always is the favorites. :/ With sour crop, I've never had luck with vinegar. When Elly had sour crop, I gave her coconut oil to eat to keep her weight up as much as possible and dosed an anti-fungal med for her. I had Nystatin to give Elly, but if that is not available (I believe you'd have to have a vet prescribe it), what I've seen recommended is Monistat. Meanwhile, I'm getting worried about my Crashie. She hasn't been herself since she started laying, and she just keeps getting worse. At first, she was just dozing a lot more than I think is normal for a healthy duck. I thought it may have been peritonitis from her egg laying troubles, so I gave her Duramycin-10 as I saw recommended, but she seems to have reacted poorly to it and I had to take her off it. Now I'm worried because she's having problems with her nose plugging and having grayish discharge from it. I keep having to give her baths so she can really snoot her nostrils out, because her nose keeps plugging and she has to mouth breath as a result. This was not happening before she was on the Duramycin, hence why I assume she reacted poorly to it, so I am crossing my fingers that it'll clear up after a few days off of it. Otherwise I'm going to have to find something else to treat her with. She is otherwise okay, still dozing a lot but also acting normal a lot. Playing in her food and water, nibbling, nosing around her bedding, stuff like that. I'm just really not sure what's going on. :/

I've been giving her a third of a supository of the monistat twice a day. This is the first time in my life I'm hoping for a big poop from her.

I wish she could just poop it out. Her crop was empty this morning but she kept drinking the electrolite water. I'm hoping that keeps her strength up. I hate the syringe feeding. I know she does too but she wont eat the yogart at all. Where do you buy the coconut oil from? Is it by the cooking oils or by the spices. I'll try that too.

You might try some nutridrench for Crash. You can buy it at Tractor supply or any feed store should have it. It's got vitamins in it and it's really good for what ails them. Good luck with her.

If I remember right, it was with the cooking oil in Meijer, if you have one nearby. You may have to syringe it as well, seems like half of my hens love it and half are indifferent. Nice thing about it is it has a low melting point, so if you spoon some into a syringe and then hold it in your hand for a few minutes, it should liquefy so you can drip it on her beak. Just be warned--it wipes the markings right off of syringes if it gets on the outside! Coconut oil has some natural antifungal properties, so it should help with the sour crop as well as giving her some calories to help hold her weight.


I'll look at Nutridrench when I'm in town next. I do have generic vitamin/electrolyte powder and Poly-Vi-Sol without iron I could use as well. Do you know if there's anything extra in Nutridrench as compared to those?

Crashie's respiratory symptoms are subsiding now, save for some sneezes and a bit of gunk in her nose still. I think she did react to the Duramycin, poor baby. She goes in and out of her 'normal' still. She's dozy right now, for instance, but was being a squirt a few minutes ago for me to get pictures. She has a good appetite and is drinking plenty, and she laid an egg yesterday so I'm fairly sure she isn't blocked again. It's rather puzzling. :/

Anyway, few Crashie antics. You can see in this first picture that her poor snoot is a little plugged on this side.

Okay, two more pictures because I thought it was funny. Normal egg on the left, 'fairy egg' on the right. This is the second one I've gotten in the past few days, I assume from the same hen. I think it's one of the Partridge Plymouth Rocks that's doing it, but I wasn't there to see, so I don't know for sure. Either way, it's cute! It's even smaller than the bantam eggs! I don't have any bantam eggs or I would have gotten a picture of it next to one.

That is a tablespoon measurer to show size. Actually, it kind of made it look bigger!

I'm reading on the back of the nutridrench it says it is a premium nutrient and supplement formulated to rapidly deliver energy and essential nutrients.

It has lysine, methlonine, calcium, vitamin a, vitamin d and vitamin e. I'm going to give some to my hen tomorrow with the sour crop. You can either put it in their water or put it directly in their mouth. It really stinks bad it smells just like vitamins.

Crashie pics are adoreable. She is a ham for the camera. I hope she gets to feeling better real soon.

I've gotten 3 of those tiny eggs over the years. I always keep them I have a little basket that I put them in.

Thanks for info on the coconut oil we have a Meyers too and I'll get her some.

I hope you don't get this storm we just had. We had large hail with high winds and of course lots of rain.

Oh, yeah. Crashie is definitely a ham. A cute little pudgy ham. I will look into Nutridrench. Someone else suggested B vitamins, which I have some tablets for on hand already, so I can give her a little of both.



No storms up here. Actually it's been clear and sunny, likely only because I've been sick and can't go out and enjoy it. But oh well. I hope everyone is safe and sound down there after the storms!






Editing to add, welp, it happened. I was searching for pictures of Golden Campine roosters a few mornings ago to show someone a henny feathered male (it was the first breed I thought of), and came across someone claiming one of my pictures of my Campine, Ihi, as their own. This is one big reason why I started marking my pictures. It's a shame so many of them are already out there and unmarked, but it's too late for them.

I waited this long to post to see how the website would respond. The picture was removed after it was reported, so at least there's some justice. Makes me paranoid about the rest of my pictures, though. :/ I don't make any claims that they are phenomenal, but they're still my pictures. If you don't have pictures of your own bird, the least you could do is say that it's not your picture but your bird is similar!

We weathered the storm here my swing blew into the koi pond but it was ok.

That's horrible that someone would use your pic and say it was their chicken. I'm glad you found it and confronted them about it.

My hen died today and it was shortly after I gave her the nutridrench. I don't know if it was her time to go or it was the medicene. Please don't give Crash the nutridrench I will never reccomend it again. We buried her just a little while ago. It's so sad to lose them. Every night when I shut the coop door I would say Good night Skiddles. In the mornings I always give them boiled eggs mashed up and peas. She always wanted me to save her some eggs so she could eat off the plate by herself. She expected it and got it every morning. I'm sure going to miss her.

I hope you get better soon this day turned out to be kind of sunny and thank goodness no rain.

Another bit of news our box turtle we thought was a boy laid an egg this morning. So Jeffery is now Jessie. That was a shock.

I am so sorry, Pattyhen. I know from firsthand experience, sometimes you try and try and try to save them and there's just nothing you can do. Make sure you get plenty of chicken hugs and take your time to mourn. Nothing can make it better immediately, but chicken hugs help.

Congrats on the turtle egg, though! Is Jessie your only turtle, or is there a little Jessie in your future from that egg?

I started giving Crash the Poly-Vi-Sol without iron yesterday (it's similar to Nutridrench, not quite all the same ingredients, but it's for human infants so I'm guessing it would be scrutinized for quality a bit more thoroughly?), so I guess I'll keep her on that instead. I can't get into town to buy anything until tomorrow anyway, which is why I went ahead and gave her some of that.








Speaking of shopping tomorrow, I have put together THE LIST of what I need to get for the brooder and do before babies arrive. The Chickie Checklist. The Chicklist, if you will. This week will be dedicated to preparing my room. This feels so odd, I usually am ready much sooner! I feel like there's barely enough time left!!

In other news, Margaret appears to want to go broody again? I have no clue what's going through her little, fluffy head. Georgette is broody as well and had to be put in a broody buster this morning, and Poppy, Scooter, and Cressida are all clucking like they're thinking about going the same route. So begins the Broody Brigade uprising!

Thank you and I am so glad you didn't give Crash the nutridrench. I think the baby vitamins would be a lot safer for her.

No little turtle babies in our future. I put her egg in my collection of itty bitty chicken eggs. I was shocked when I saw the egg we were so sure she was a he.

One week on the new babies that's so exciting. Are you going to take pics of them weekly like you did the silkies?

We have more rain today. The ducks love all the rain but the chickens aren't happy with it all.

Marge wants more babies. I love silkies but they are so broody all the time. You don't need an incubater when you have silkies.
